The tiny dragon stared at the much bigger dragon standing in front of him. The bigger dragon crouched with hunched shoulders, it's wings pressed tightly against its body, it's teeth bared and a loud growl resonating around the cave as it stared at the meat in the smaller dragon's talons. It's whole posture made it clear that it would attack if the smaller dragon didn't give up it's food.
The small dragon looked unimpressed and showed no sign of being intimidated by the larger dragon's aggressive behaviour. He waited patiently as the large dragon inched closer, it's great eyes never leaving the morsel of meat in the tiny dragon's possession. The small dragon didn't move, he watched the large dragon as the brute tried to get him to cower in fear. He would do no such thing, he already had to fight for this small piece and he refused to let this dragon take it away from him.
The larger dragon seemed to realise that the small dragon would not back down so he changed tactics and prepared to fight. The smaller dragon noticed the subtle chang&es in the other dragon's posture that reflected its thoughts.
That had been what the little dragon had been waiting for, he moved quickly to take advantage of the others distracted thoughts. He reared back on his hind legs and spread his wings wide while hissing loudly.
The large dragon had not anticipated for his prey to suddenly grow twice it's size or behave in such an aggressive manner. He eyed the new challenger wearily not sure what to make of it. He looked at the piece of meat again before deciding it wasn't worth it and stalked off.
The small dragon stayed standing as he watched the other dragon as it ran off to attack one of its numerous siblings. Saticefied that he would be left alone, he dropped onto his front legs and tucked his wing neatly again his body. He picked up his small piece of meat and walked towards his corner on the far side of the cave, away from the others.
He ate the piece of meat quickly before another bigger dragon could try to take it away again. It was a small piece, he finished it in only a few bites, hardly enough to be considered fighting over. After he swallowed the last bite he proceeded to groom his scales. He watched the other dragons as he preened his smooth scales, experience telling him not to keep his eyes off of them for too long.
There were eight of them in total, six were hatchlings, the other was an adult male that was responsible for looking after the young. They were all a grey-brown colour with hard scales, large and muscular, covered in spikes with large and twisted horns atop the head. The babies had smaller horns of course but they would grow with time.
The tiny dragon was different from the others and he knew it. If the other dragons attitude towards him didn't make that obvious than his appearance did the trick. He had a small and slim build, his bright green scales looked more smooth and he only had two tiny horns on his head.
Although they had all hatched from the same nest, the tiny dragon knew there was no way he was related to the other hatchlings. They looked completely different and we're much larger than him, even though he was still a baby and had growing to do he knew he would never get as big as the others.
The light in the cave was started to fade a away signalling the end of the day. The tiny dragon watched as the eight other dragons settled down to sleep. He didn't dare try while the others were still awake, instead he watched as they all curled up against the adult dragon and dozed off. The adult dragon watched the tiny dragon the whole time.
The tiny dragon knew the adult dragon would not sleep with him there, he was a possible threat. So he curled up into a ball in his corner and tried to ignore them.
A pain in his stomach woke him up in the middle of the night. He tried to ignore it and go back to sleep but when his stomach growled he got up and walked towards the cave entrance. He didn't want to wake the other dragons, who had very keen hearing, the last time that happened didn't end well.
He stepped out onto ledge outside of the cave. He yawned and stretched his body before sitting near the edge. He watched the black ocean move on the horizon, then looked up at the sky to admire the stars.
His stomach growled again begging him for food. The tiny dragon shook his head then made his way down the side of the mountain and towards the shore where the sea met the land. He was hoping to find a nest of some kind of ground bird to guilt his stomach so he could go back to sleep.
The rocks were rough on his delicate foot and there were many loose stones that made him slip and nearly fall to his death. He moved slowly, careful not make any sudden movements. He made it about halfway when he heard a low growl to his left.
The tiny dragon froze. His body was shaking as he turned his head in the direction of the noise. His heart beat sped up up his eyes laid upon a huge dragon. It looked the same as the ones in thwe cave except this one was bigger, had a large scar across his face and was preparing to attack.
The tiny dragon knew that making himself look big would be a bad idea, even with the added size he would still look pathetic in comparison to the dragon and he didn't want to provoke him. So the tiny dragon did the opposite and tried to make himself seem like less of a threat by making himself smaller. He pressed his wings tight against he body as he laid himself on the ground.
The huge dragon lunged. The tiny dragon tried to scramble away but was not fast enough. He felt the dragons talons dig into his skin and yelped. He struggled to get out of the dragon's grasp but that only made the claws sink deeper.
The next thing he knew he was being carried by the large dragon into the air. The tiny dragon was terrified but refused to go down without a fight. He sunk his teeth into the larger dragon's foot that was holding him. The dragon roared and let go.
The tiny dragon fell.
He didn't know how to fly but instinct took over. He flapped his wings, desperate to become airborne, but he remained falling. There was a tear in his right wing where the dragon had grabbed him, making it impossible for the tiny dragon to fly.
So he fell.
The wind cold as he tumbled downward. His panic and desperation growing. Until he finally accepted his fate. He stopped trying to flap his wings. He closed his eyes. He was at peace. He let himself fall.
He landed in the ocean.
