The gusts of wind coming from the open window of the car blow pieces of hair into my face, making it difficult to look pissed off so my mom can see how much I hate that I am going to yet another school. I throw in the ever-so-subtle sigh and angsty groan now and then, but she doesn't seem to care. She never does. This is stupid. My parents are stupid.
"We're at your new school! Get excited!" My mom exclaims, turning her head to the side as she turns into the parking lot of Oak Meadow High School.
"Yay. So pumped. You don't even know how excited I am." I say in the most monotone voice that I can achieve. My mom sighs and turns to me. Tears are in her eyes, and I know that I've messed up.
"Olivia, do you really think that I like moving all the time? Do you think that I want you to start your Sophomore year at some school where you don't know anyone? I don't. I hate all this moving just as much as you do, I really do. But we don't have a choice in the matter. Your father's job takes him all over the country and we go where he goes. That's how it has always been and I'd really appreciate it if you could be more supportive."
Ouch.
"I'm sorry mom. I didn't mean to make you cry." I said, feeling like shit.
She wipes the tears from her eyes and puts on a smile. "It's alright hun. I know," she sighs. "Just try to make this the best first day it can be."
I say goodbye and step out of the car. The large brick school is a short walk away, yet it feels like miles. Everyone already knows each other. Everyone already has their cliques and groups and this sucks.
I make my way into the school and begin to walk down the hall. I already know where I'm going seeing as I was given a tour last week, yet it's weird to see the halls full of people. No one looks at me, I don't expect them to. Moving schools isn't like in the movies. No one watches you as you walk down the halls, no popular girls are threatened by you. You're just there, going to school.
The first couple of classes are alright, seats are assigned so I don't have to awkwardly sit in the back by myself. Then comes 4th period English. Mrs. Lewis tells us to sit wherever we please and the worst part of moving schools begins. I choose a seat near the middle of the room and hope no one sits next to me. My hopes are shattered. A pale boy with short brownish hair and a girl with mocha colored skin and long dark hair sit on either side of me.
"What's your name?" The boy asks, squinting his eyes at me.
"Nathan you're squinting where are your glasses." says the girl.
"Jesus Christ, Vanessa you sound like my mom. Also thanks for interrupting her rude ass bitch." The boy, Nathan, says as he rolls his eyes. He looks back at me. "No but for real what's your name?"
"Olivia..." I say, wondering why they're here and why they're talking to me, usually no one does until the third day or so.
"That's a cute name. Where are you from?" Asks Vanessa.
"Florida, originally. But my family moves all over the place." I reply, wondering why class hasn't started yet.
"Why the hell did you move to Ohio," Nathan says with a face full of disgust. "Like no offense but Ohio is boring."
I laugh. "My dad's job requires him to relocate all the time. This time it was Montgomery, Ohio."
"Ew that sucks. What does your dad do?" Vanessa asks.
"He's a meteorologist, he studies weather patterns. Apparently the weather a couple towns over has been extremely abnormal. So we got a house here." I respond. I wonder why they're so interested in me.
"Oh wow well that reminds me-" Nathan is cut off by Mrs. Lewis.
"Alright class, welcome to 4th period English. I have a feeling this is going to be a great year."
And for some reason, so do I.
