You get used to it. The crunching sounds of every step. The sound of moving forward, persistence. The sound you make when you don't give up. I know that sound, and i know it very well. I take a deep breathe and let it all in.
Though the weather is humid and hot like any summer in Los Angeles I still wear heavy clothing. nylon black pants and a black shirt, and black heavy boots. My food supply is dangerously low which is why i have to make such a risky trip. The only way I managed to survive was to shoot them and run. Even though the store must already have been plucked clean though when it was, there weren't enough survivors to take one hundred percent of the supplies.
Usually this is my stop, the hot spot of the area were i stash the majority of the good stuff, food ,water medicine you name it. I keep it in this area, the demon population is low here. I'd be damned to leave this city i dont know whats out there. Just potential threats, dying is not an option at least not yet.
My surroundings are simple, im on an avenue, to be more specific on a roof of a tire shop. Across the street lies a massive parking lot and an abondoned grocery store. The demons roam freely in the parking lot waiting for a panicking survivor or two to feast on. They have pale skin, and black eyes, some are fast while others are slow. To some they are zombies to others demons, at the end of the day you better lodge an arrow in their head or they'll rip your neck open. I've been close to death before, and I might never forget that day.
I was younger then, and stupid not knowing what potential threats lingered in the world. it was a year after it all started, it was cold and rainy. I had no food , my stomach was roaring of hunger. I had my bow and arrows as always. i lingered into a corn field I shouldnt have gone alone. the others of the group insisted. to go with me, but I told them I work faster alone. I had a small bag for the corn and I had my bow loaded always ready to fight. from one area I managed to get a dozen corns. I hurried back to the group I slipped and fell from the mud. I got up and heard it. a moan, the moan that screams danger. there was one. i managed to kill it off. Then there was two. I started to sprint so they wouldnt follow me towards the group but they did. I slid down a muddy hill. My bow was fifteen yards up the hill from where I fell. The demons were up the hill. I screamed of fear. my left ankle was sprained. I tried to get up but I couldnt. I layed my head down on the muddy floor as the rain pounded down on me. I waited for them to come. To rip my flesh open. Only they didnt, and a bright light flashed. of course it was the others who had come looking for me. They told me they had been woried and went searching for me. after that they never let me go alone ever again. or even go out ever again. a month later they died. No i left them actually. They soon realized they could'nt live without me...
Its ironic because i cant even save myself.
