A massive thank you to ramatilekar for your amazing covers and support. The choices were so difficult I was forced to split the book!
"Boys." Thor and I stop battling with our sticks as we're approached by one of father's men. "The All-Father requests your audience in the weapons chamber." Thor's eyes widen. Up until now, we've always been deemed too young to go down into the crypt but my curiosity has meant I've snuck down there more than once.
"I wonder what he could want with us, brother," Thor says, dropping his stick as the guard leads us under the palace.
"No idea," I admit. "Perhaps it has something to do with the anniversary of the Frost Giants battle."
"Pardon?" he frowns and I roll my eyes.
"Do you not listen to a word Kvasir teaches us?"
"Frankly I believe you read too much brother," Thor retorts.
"If it prevents me from being an ignorant cow such as yourself, then I will continue to read," I smirk. Thor glares at me then suddenly leaps forward and begins wrestling with me.
"Enough!" Thor drops me immediately and I realise we've arrived in the chamber. Father steps forward out of the shadow and looks us over as I clamber to my feet and brush myself down. "Is this any way to behave on the anniversary of peace?" I give Thor a knowing look and he rolls his eyes in response.
"What happened in the battle, Father?" Thor asks.
"Didn't it have something to do with Midgardians?" I say.
"You are correct, Loki," the All-Father responds. "But do you know how they were involved?" I shake my head. "Once mankind accepted a simple truth: that they were not alone in this universe. Some worlds, man believed to be home to their gods. Others, they knew to fear. From a Realm of cold and darkness, came the Frost Giants. Threatening to plunge the mortal world, into a new ice age. But humanity, would not face this threat alone. Our armies drove the Frost Giants, back into the heart of their own world. The cost was great. In the end, their king fell. And the source of their power, was taken from them. With the last great war ended, we withdrew from the other worlds, and returned home, to the realm eternal... Asgard. And here, we remain as the beacon of hope. Shining out across the stars. And though we have fallen into man's myths and legends, it was Asgard, and its warriors, that brought peace to the universe. But the day will come, when one of you, will have to defend that peace."
"Do the Frost Giants still live?" I ask, in awe of the story.
"When I'm a king," Thor replies, grinning from beside me, "I'll hunt the monsters down, and slay them all! Just as you did, Father."
"A wise king," father replies calmly, "never seeks out war, but... he must always be ready for it."
"I'm ready, Father," Thor replies immediately.
"So am I!" I chip in.
"Only one of you can ascend to the throne," he reminds us. "But both of you, were born to be kings." Thor and I exchange looks. He's firstborn so it's his birthright. But I don't mind really - he'd make a great king. I'm clever and quick whereas he's strong and skilled - more like father. Being king sounds pretty dull anyway.

FanfictionIt's true that history is always written by the victors, and even family ties won't stop them from making out that I was in the wrong. All I ever wanted to be was Thor's equal. I didn't realise I was asking too much.
