Waiting. All we could do was wait. The back street now filled with people. An ambulance had taken the unconscious man about 20 minutes ago, the other, taken away in a body bag after pictures had been taken of him. Their SUV had been searched, some belongings uncovered. The scene had been cleared, like we were never here. The US branch of the agency were the people working the case now. It's not like the NY police could be brought in, after all we're in 'hiding'. After I'd told about what happened to the guys back home, two vans rolled up within a couple of minutes. No one even needed to address us, they knew the deal...
“I feel like I'm in an episode of CSI..” Nathan muttered from beside me. We were sat in the back of one of the agency vans, the door rolled back so we could watch the commotion outside. People rushed back and forth across the alleyway, taking pictures, then cleaning up, searching, then packing up. It was vital that no 'normal' ,should we say, people ever thought something went on here. We were of course forced to stay till they were done. All I wanted was to get away, onto the road again, move far from here, far away. It wouldn't help. I knew it wouldn't. It took them just two days to find us in New York, going to a new state would hardly help much, they could have anyone working with them.
“Are you scared?” Nath asked suddenly, I looked to him, his eyes were fixated on those working outside. “I- .... I don't know.... I guess” I shrugged and he finally turned to me. “I am. I'm terrified.” he shook his head and a chuckle escaped his mouth, as though he sounded ridiculous to himself. “You think about things a lot ... don't you? About how this will all turn out ... in the end?” I questioned and he glanced at me then continued to watch those in front of us. He didn't answer for a couple of minutes. “I ... do sometimes ... wonder, how it'll end. Both sides can't win y'know-” he focused his gaze on me again. “I just ... hope we're on the winning side ...” he shrugged, I nodded at him, not knowing how to else reply.
A tall, slender woman, most likely in her early twentys, strolled up to us. Her blonde hair was tied into a high ponytail and she wore all black. She glanced at me before going back to the folder in her hands, “Katrina ... I think you're pretty much free to go ... We've fitted your car with a radio system which'll let you contact us straight away ... incase anything else happens.-” She looked at me and nodded, I did the same as she turned to Nath. “You want me to check out that cut on your face? ... Looks ... painful” She lifted her hand to his face, missing it as he pulled away. “I'm fine ... thanks” he mumbled and got up from his seat, squeezing past her to hop down onto the path. “We should go ... Kat” He nodded at the woman and retreated to our car.
“Well ... alright ... um ... safe journey? ..” She walked back to her team looking slightly bewildered. “Yeah ... yeah” I muttered quietly, though she was already out of earshot. I followed Nathan to our car, taking my place in the now familiar drivers seat. Nath already settled in next to me, a map opened in front of him. “We leaving NY?” “Mmm, it's probably best, we'll start along the coast, go as far as we can till we reach one of the hotels there-” I leaned over looking at the map, pointing to the strip along the east coast, an abundance of accomodation spots and fuel stops marked along it. “Right..” he folded up and put away the map and buckled his seatbelt. “You sure you don't wanna get cleaned up or checked out or....?” He looked at me simply, shaking his head gently and giving a small smile which lingered on his face, until he rested his head on the seat and closed his eyes. “Don-” “I'm not sleeping” He assured.
With that I started the car, pulling back and turning to make my way back up the street, receiving a nod or two from those stood around. Back on course. We made our way further and further from the scene, from the city. I was glad.

A long drive along the highway. Cars, vans, trucks zoomed past us. The radio blaring so there wasn't any chance of silence, we didn't know what to say to each other, being honest. All we ever did was ask how we were. Sometimes ending in screaming, sometimes in tears. I noticed for the first time that we'd never really had a nice, happy ... normal conversation. Not once.
