"Hey, are you here?" A feminine voice drifted out of his phone, melting into his ears with a delightful cadence. That voice had been trapped behind a digital speaker for far too long, and they had decided earlier that week that it was time to finally meet once more.
"Yup, I'm here. Just waiting for you." He responded, doing his best to keep calm. He exhaled, unable to contain the ever-increasing heartbeat that had tortured him for days. He wasn't in love, that couldn't be true. He was just...excited. Nervous. Scared. Completely normal feelings for this type of situation.
"Hmm...I can't find you. Are you sure you're in the right place?" She sounded a bit concerned.
He surveyed the area, wondering if she had missed him on the way. That was odd; she had specifically told him to be at this very location. He checked his texts just to make sure, his mind racing towards all the possible ways he could have messed up. "I'm sure I came to the right place. Isn't your house the white one on the corner?" He asked, attempting to buy time as he rummaged through his text history.
A giggle broke his concentration, the sound delaying for a split second before repeating in his other ear. "You're so clueless.." the voice teased, followed by a tap on the back.
He spun around, immediately greeted with a compassionate smile. She put her phone down, holding her hands behind her back.
"Well? Is the real deal better than what you've heard so far?" She raised her eyebrows, expecting an answer.
He couldn't help but grin. Leave it to her to pull something like that. He didn't mind. As long as they were able to meet.
Time seemed to accelerate, a gust of wind almost knocking him off balance. It almost felt like a scene from a TV show, like the climax of the final episode. But he knew that his journey was only beginning. Right?
"Well..it's been five years since we've seen each other last. Let's start from the top."
"Hi. I'm Pam."
She held out her hand politely, as if the two had never met before. He met her formality with his own, opening his mouth to introduce himself once more.
"Hey. I'm -- "
A flash of light interrupted his sentence, quickly filling his vision with a blast of white. He rubbed his eyes for a bit, his eyesight blurred before coming into focus once more. He was astonished to find what he could only describe as a mirror image of himself staring back, a confused gaze in his eyes.
"What the hell?" He spoke, only to hear a softer tone behind his usual speech pattern. These words only caused his mirror to flinch back, his own voice travelling through this new person's mouth.
"What's going on..?" his mirror asked, looking at his own hand and gasping. "Did we.." He couldn't finish his own sentence, as if he was horrified at the thought of what he was going to say.
Confused, he took a glimpse down at his own hand, only to recoil at the sight of a skirt where his jeans had been. He glanced back up at his mirror, slowly piecing together what had happened.
"I think we --" he began to say.
"Switched...bodies.." Pam - well, Pam in his body - interrupted. "Huh."
"How can we reverse this?" He asked, a hint of panic in his voice. He didn't know how long he could stand the body he was in.
Pam shrugged, seemingly less worried about the situation than him. "Not...sure." She paused for a moment to think. "Let's see how this goes! Maybe it could be fun!"
