Moving to Australia meant that the family would be together to support Jan and Lily’s brother Tom in the new job opportunities they got. Jan would be working as head nurse at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Tom would be working and living in Sydney as assistant director for the new 'Looking For Alaska' movie by John Green.

The family house was simple with its white plaster walls, black tiled roof and powder blue door but it was everything Lily could have asked for. Having lived beside the sea her whole life in Northern Ireland a deal breaker on the house was its location in relation to the beach; which happened to be 5 minutes away. The house included a reasonable sized front garden and a spacious back garden.

Lily had deferred her University application and hoped to find a job in the Melbourne area which would be useful for her product design course. However Lily soon discovered that there weren't any jobs available that would be useful for her course. But was able to find a toy company in Sydney which were advertising for a new design intern for their new line of girl dolls. It even had a salary, Lily couldn't miss this opportunity. After many falls outs and late nights Lily’s parents finally agreed to allow her to get her own place in the city and her own sky blue Fiat 500 for driving to her new job.

Once the family home was set up the Smallfields once again packed up Lily’s possessions and took the 9hr trip back to Sydney to the new apartment.

They met the land lord outside to get the keys for Lily’s own place. He explained that it was on the fourth floor. As Lily and her parents ascended the stairs, she realised that her parents were becoming more and more fidgety but Lily passed it off as excitement.

As they made it to the fourth floor Lily noticed a big red bow stuck on the door and ran up to the door out of excitement; fumbling with the keys that had been in her hand the whole way up. On closer inspection she noticed the door was already unlocked and slightly ajar.
Panic raced through Lily's entire body. "Mum... Dad... The door is already open..." Lily screamed however her parents seemed calm, they were even giggling.  "Did I miss something? What are you not telling me?"

"Why don't you go inside?" Jan suggested.

Lily pushed the door open sceptically at her mother's suggestion.
"Hello...?” Lily called out into the dark apartment. “Marco?"

"Polo!" A familiar voice called out from not too far away. Lily would know that voice anywhere!

"Charles?!" The lights flicked on and who was stood by the light switch? None other than Charlie Quinn, Lily's best friend in the entire world.

Lily ran at Charlie and through her arms around the shorter girl. Charlie froze up at the interaction but soon accepted it and joined in the embrace. They were never the hugging type or any physical contact of any type for that matter but this was one of those exceptions.

Lily's parent had now joined the girls in the hall way of the apartment. The girls pulled away. "Why are you here? Not that I don’t want you here but why is your face in my home?" Both girls giggled.

"Charlie why don't you fill Lily in on what we've all decided on?" Jan prompted.

"Lily, you know how I'm taking a Gap year?" Charlie’s eyes were sparkling with pure joy as she spoke, "Well, you’re parents emailed my 'Rents telling them how they were worried who then got together with me and decided that it would be a good idea for both of us if I came and lived with you for most of it!"

Lily was speechless, almost!
"What? What?" Her arms were flailing all over the place, "Is this for real brah?"

Charlie just nodded frantically in response, she had the biggest grin ever!

After 4 days of laughter, catching up, pizza and minimal furniture arranging Charlie got an awful phone call from her dad saying that her grandmother had suddenly passed away after a heart attack. Charlie was completely devastated and arranged to go home for 2 weeks so she could attend the funeral and be there for her family. Lily wanted to go with her but they both agreed it was a waste of money. Lily dropped Charlie to the airport. They both got out of the car, Lily looked at Charlie and saw the tears in her eyes. “Come here Charles!” Lily wrapped her arm around Charlie.
