Lucy woke as every morning to Charlie's manic pouncing, first a doggy face wash then him sat on her head "For frick's sake," she exclaimed pushing him of for the tenth time "I'm getting up already." checking her phone she forced her eyes to focus "No.. no not five am again. Why can't you just sleep like a good puppy?" Lucy ruffed his fur and dragged her clothes on, wondering what had possessed her to think getting another puppy in her already over loaded life was a good idea. "I blame you, Rolo for being so easy." Rolo stretched languidly giving Lucy that old man look that only a Labrador pup could pull off, while Charlie sprang round as springers do. "Let's get you two fed." Lucy looked back longingly at Max snoring softly in bed and her empty spot, then headed for the stairs.
Lucy appraised herself in the bathroom mirror. The dark circles under her eyes almost hidden by make up, her unruly chocolate brown hair, falling almost to her waste was now secured in a neat roll. With her hair up she had an elfin quality to her fine features. Which was only enhanced by her waif-like figure. ***
Twenty minutes later Lucy sat rubbing her hands trying to get feeling back into them while she waited for her car to defrost. 'I need a break,' she thought mournfully, 'but at least there'll be no traffic at this time, might even have time to grab a Sandwich along the way.'
Daylight tussled with the darkness to make itself felt unsuccessfully. As Lucy sped down country lanes gradually gaining speed. Bare tree branches seemed to reach out like withered arms. Lucy shivered turned up the heater and clicked the radio to tune out her over active imagination. Relaxing Lucy pushed the mustang faster feeling it skit as it gained speed. As Lucy headed to high ground snow began to swirl round steadily, then as if some one had dropped a white veil the blitzed distended. Lucy blinked as if in slow motion she felt her mustang slide into the withered arms of the gnarly old tree, felt the sickening thud as the mustang slammed into its trunk flipping the front to the hedge bottom torn almost in two.
