Chapter 1

I close my eyes and listen to the music blasting through my old, beat-up Skullcandys:

"You pop caught you smoking - and he said, no way!

That hypocrite - smokes two packs a day

Man, living at home is such a drag

Now your mom threw away your best porno mag"

"Fight for your Right" by the Beatie Boys plays on repeat. I'm much to lazy to change the song to anything else, even though I'm kind of yearning to listen to the Clash. Or maybe Mumford and Sons. Just maybe. I look up as I hear my door being flung open, my little sister, Perry, bolting through. I sit up, taking of my headphones.

"Hunter! Hunter! Oh, my God! Oh, my God!" she yells. I watch as she begins to pant after running up the stairs and into my room, full speed. Our house isn't very big, but running through it can tire you out.

"Ok, Perry. What is it? What's wrong?" I scoot over to let her sit with me.

She flops onto the bed. "One. Direction," she whispers.

"Okay... And?"

She jumps off of the bed, looking straight at me. "And? AND? Hunter, it's One freaking Direction!"

"Language!"

"Whatever," she sighs. "Besides, you don't even know who they are!"

"Do too!"

She raises both eyebrows. "Oh, yeah? Name one of their songs!"

I think for a moment. "Um... Pay phone!" I say with complete confidence.

Perry shakes her head. "Oh, puh-lease."

"So what's the big deal about One Direction?" I ask.

"Well, Suzi got tickets for them tonight and I'm going!"

I get up, taking her small, ten-year-old hand in mine. "Well, congratulations! Perry Larson is going to to see One Direction in concert. I am so proud of you. How absolutely lucky I am to be your big sister!" I say sarcastically. She rolls her blue eyes and sticks her tongue out.

I hear a honk outside and Perry squeals, nealing down to slip on her flower printed wedges, which had fallen off her feet when she had gotten off my bed. "Gottagobye!" she calls as she walks out my room and out to the waiting car.

"Be safe!" I yell after her. Jesus Christ. Perry has more of a social life than me, and I'm seven years older than the twat. I'm stuck in my black hole of a room, shades drawn, music blasting. Ha, I sound like I just walked out of a Forever the Sickest Kids song.

Soon, my mind turns to One Direction. I've never really heard any of their music, but I'm not really into the whole boy band thing. Or the crazy fans, for that matter. I look around my room at the stacks of CDs: M83, Hole, Alice in Chains, All Time Low, and The Black Keys. Not really boy band material.

I walk over to my laptop, excuse me, Perry's laptop (I have to borrow hers) and Google "One Driection". Instantly, billions of hits come up. I watch some interviews and sift through picture after picture. Come to think of it, I remember this girl I sit next to in calculus, Jocelyn, talking about the one named Niall. I'm not sure which one that is. The one with the kind of curly hair is a little cute, but his hair also looks kind of like a hairball that the world's biggest cat puked up. I chuckle to myself at the thought of a large cat throwing up on the boys head, him wearing it as a wig.

I plug my headphones back into my Perry's old iPod, which has since become mine, and begin to play Imagine Dragons at full sound. I end up falling asleep to "It's Time".

I dream of my parents. My real parents, Phillip and Jaqueline. They were hardcore addicts, so they decided it would be best for them to drop myers at my aunt and uncle's doorstep, to give me a "better life". Bullshit. Aunt Lydia and Uncle Anderson have always held a grudge against me for what my parents did. Hence, Perry, their real daughter, is the favorite, and I am treated as shit. Well, they dont abuse me or nothing, but I'm not allowed to go out with boys or go to parties or have fun. And I'm in BIG trouble if I even hang out with my friends. Pfft, if I had any. Perry can be pretty nice, and she introduces people to me as her big sister, and I tell them she's my little sister. But she knows she's special. She could get away with assassinating the president, and I would be the one thrown in jail. I never even got a birthday party.

I dream of my mom cuddling me, playing gently with my fat baby legs, bowling bubbles on my stomach. I giggle and laugh. I wrap my small hands around her little finger. She laughs. My dad comes home, and he and mom take turns playing with me. Dad sits me on his lap, moving my arms, trying to get me to dance. I laugh more. I reach my hand out to feel his face, but, as if sand in the wind, he disappears. I look to my mom. She is gone, too. The room vanishes, leaving me, now fully grown into my seventeen-year-old self, alone in the darkness. I begin to fall down. Faster, faster, faster.

I wake up with a start. I stay in my bed for a few seconds, then get up to a ringing sound. I look around to find my phone, which is the source of the noise. The caller I.D. says its from Perry. "Hello?" I ask into the phone.

"Hey, Hunter," a nervous voice says in the other line. "When are mom and dad coming back from Hawaii?"

I think for a moment. I could really care less, but i was left in charge. If Perry rats on me, telling Lydia and Anderson I wasn't sure when they were coming, I'd get in trouble. They'd think I was being "irresponsible". Hell, I get in trouble for sneezing wrong.

"One week," I answer. "Why?"

There is a dead silence on the other side. "Well, um, I met a few friends, and they, um, need a place to crash for a few days."

"Where's Suzi?"

"Her mom picked her up."

"She didn't drive you home?" I ask.

"No," Perry answers sharply. "So can they stay with us or not? Please?"

"Are they drug dealers?"

"No."

"Pedophiles? Did they try and touch you?'

"Hunter, ew. No."

I pause, contemplating. I mean, what could really go wrong. They'll only be here a few days. "Well, go ahead and bring them on over."

I hear a couple of cheers from the other line.

"Thanks, Hunter, I love you!" Perry says. She hangs up the phone, and I try to recognize the voices that i heard cheering in the background.

The voices were deep, sounding like men's or boy's voices. I sigh. This better not be who I think it is.
