The Night Before Halloween

It was the night before halloween and I can’t sleep,

So I went to the kitchen and took a peep.

But what I saw took my breath away.

The greatest shock of my life, this I can say.

Dancing in the moonlight was a very pretty lady,

Her long white gown swishing, but I felt uneasy.

For ahead in the shadows was a headless horseman,

Watching her progress, like a vigilant man.

Tick-tock, tick-tock went the clock.

My knees shook violently so I chose to duck.

Clutching my heart which beats rapidly fast,

This unexpected nightmare, I hoped it would last.

Collecting my courage, I peeped up again,

The lady was gone and it started to rain.

I took a sigh of relief and smiled to myself

I was just dreaming. But you can’t imagine what happened next.

Amid the pounding rain, I heard a baby crying,

I creased my forehead and listened but my ears can’t be lying.

For in the middle of the garden I saw a basket,

Which on the moment I blinked became a casket.

The casket flew high above in the air,

My heart jumped to my throat and seemed to stay there.

The casket seemed to be advancing over to me,

And the scream I’ve been caging is now finally free.

I turned around and ran as I screamed from the top of my lungs,

I closed my eyes and I whispered my psalms.

My eyes slowly opened, the wind slapped me hard,

And behold I saw my self in front of a graveyard.

Chills ran down my spine as I slowly walked forward.

A single tear rolled down my cheek and I was shaking so hard.

A sinister laughter made my hair stand on end,

My soul broke, a shame, it’s impossible to mend.

Screaming is not an option so I prayed and prayed,

The wind blew, the dead leaves flew and the trees swayed.

Then a hush fell on that faithful night.

I looked around and I’m back on my bed illuminated by a dim light.

Gasping for breath with perspiration on my forehead,

I needed a drink so I stepped out of bed.

I put on my nightgown and my silent slippers,

And shook my head to stop thinking of creepers.

It is the night before Halloween and I just woke up from my sleep,

So I went to the kitchen and took a peep.

For what I dreamed took my breath away,

The greatest thrill of my life, this I can say.
