I woke up, drenched in sweat. I looked over and saw the time on my clock. 3'o clock in the morning. "Another bad memory," I thought to myself. I shook my head and gripped my hair. Ever since that day, I had recurrent dreams.
I was only ten at that time. I had woken up to my mother screams and loud wails at dawn. I groggily wiped the sleep out of my eyes and slowly walked towards the bathroom where mother's loud wailing came from.
I saw my sister, Serris, cover her mouth. Getting curious, I ran towards her, only to have my heart stop. My other sister, Sarah, was on the ground, lying in the bathtub, red water surrounding her. Many little cuts on her arms and two deep cuts on both of them.
I shook with tears falling off my cheeks. "Sa- Sarah," I whispered, shocked. My, mother was kneeling on the ground with Sarah's head in her arms. "Sean, get the phone," Serris muttered, hands on my shoulders.
Our father worked from early in the morning to late in the night. He was a hardworking man. But we never got to see him. We were blessed to have him. If it wasn't for him. We would be living on the streets.
Currently, he was in China on a business trip again. Fortunately, only for a few days. I grabbed the nearest cellphone and handed it to Serris. She quickly dialled a number and put it on speaker. After a few rings, the phone was picked up.
"Dad, you need to come back home. Now," Serris said, shaking.
--------------------------------------
Serris was the smart one in the family. She was also the most alert. It is no surprise that she knew what to do straight away. She would always have an extra eye out for us. Never had she once failed us.
Mother was helpful and loving. From time to time, she would go to work around thrice a week. For the rest of the days, she would work at home. Although father provided enough for our family, she wanted to work just in case anything luck we had vanished. She would give up anything just for us. I even once heard her saying she would give up her life just for us to be happy.
I, Sean, was the loudest and most outgoing in the family. I was also reserved but only to people whom I did not trust. I would always start the conversations and bring out the awkwardness in the middle of conversations. But I would speak out my mind and I will always regret it. I encouraged my siblings to get out of the house and go into the light.
Sarah, well she was the glue that kept our family together. She had a light that could guide anyone out of their pain and sorrow. When our father almost lost his job, Sarah continued to support him and never failed to bring joy to the family. The light she had went out like fire goes out on a candle when you blow it. And nobody knew. Sarah, unlike me, keeps every problem she has or had to herself. Never once had she told us anything hurting her until we figured it out.
I want to protect people whom I love and trust. I want their lights to stay on. I don't want to lose anyone. Never again. Never again would I let anyone's light go out. Never would I ever let anyone leave me again.
