Prologue:
Amelia Sanders sat back in her desk chair, her laptop set up in front of her. She had been planning on making this video for weeks, but now that the day had come she couldn’t find the right words. Usually words flowed through her out into the world giving people little bits of her extensive knowledge, but not today.
The three words that needed to come out the most were stuck in her throat causing tears to rise in her eyes.
Looking out her window she gazed at the Anderson children playing in the street below, oblivious to this world's tragedies. If only she could return to such an oblivious state. Leaning forward Amelia clicked the record button on her laptop, the words she so desperately needed suddenly there.
“Hi.. my name is Amelia Sanders and I’m sixteen. A couple weeks ago I found out that I have a brain tumour.” Amelia stopped, looking down at her lap. The news had hit home for happy-go-lucky Amelia.
“For a while I have been getting headaches, and feeling really tired. My parents decided that it would be best if I went to the doctor to figure out what was wrong. Never in a million years did I expect to have cancer. I’m only sixteen, I have so many things to do with my life, but it's possible my life is about to end.” A lone tear streaked down her cheek, as her voice became wobbly.
“The doctor had me MRI scan to check if there was anything to be worried about going on in my brain. As it turns out there was something to be worried about. Tomorrow I’m going in for surgery. I’ve never been so scared in my life. Anything can go wrong, I could die tomorrow. The world would never even know who I was. Just another life lost to cancer. That’s why I decided to do this video, so maybe someone out there would know who I am.” Shakily Amelia ran a hand through her hair.
“If I die tomorrow I want people to know the real Amelia Sanders, not the fragile girl with cancer. I know you probably think that I am over doing this, that I’ll be fine, but you don’t know that. I don’t know that.” Shifting in her chair Amelia rubbed her temple as her head began to throb with another headache.
“I am just a regular girl. My favorite color is blue, I love the ocean, and being outdoors. I like walking around the mall with my best friends even though I never buy anything. Like many hopeless romantics I like long walks on the beach, and candle lit dinners. I believe in love at first sight. I listen to Taylor Swift and Olly Murs. When I can get my hands on music I’ll listen to anything.” A smile lit up Amelia’s face as she began to talk about what she loves. Her blonde hair was thrown over one of her tan shoulders. Her green eyes sparkled as she thought about love.
“Maybe one day I’ll meet someone and fall in love. My future depends on the outcome of tomorrow. I would like to believe that after tomorrow I will be the same old me, but there’s a small part of me that doesn’t think I’ll make it after tomorrow. I guess all I can really ask for is prayers, and hope. God knows that I’ll need it.” A small chuckle left Amelia’s lips as she wished everyone a great day. Turning away from the computer with a brighter perspective Amelia carefully pulled on a pair of pajamas, and laid down on her bed.
Sleep carried Amelia off to a land of dreams, but not even Amelia could dream what was happening around the world at that moment.
Blue Rapids, Kansas [Andrew Dunder]
Leaning back on his bed Andrew could feels his eyes welling up with tears. The video of Amelia Sanders had gone viral over night. Andrew had never laid eyes upon a girl so beautiful as the one Amelia Sanders. His heart broke as he learned of her illness and fears. Such a strong girl facing something as scary as death. Andrew couldn’t help but want to help the girl in some way.
Jumping up from his spot on his bed he ran out of his room and down the stairs. Reaching the first story bathroom he looked at himself in the mirror. Andrew was a good looking guy, with shaggy brown hair hair and deep blue eyes. Grabbing his camera he set it up facing the mirror so he could see himself, and clicked record.
“Hi my name is Andrew Dunder and I’m seventeen. Just a few minutes ago I watched a video that brought me to tears. To show my support for Amelia Sanders I’m doing something I never thought I would” Holding up a pair of hair clippers, he took off the guard so it would shave as close to his hairline as possible.
“Amelia this is for you!” With those words he pressed the on button and slowly began shaving his brown hair off. Clumps fell onto the floor gathering slowly around his feet. When he was done Andrew looked up into the mirror and ran a hand over his now bald head.
“While watching your video Amelia the only thing I could think about was the fact that you were able to stay so strong. My prayers are with you.” With that he stopped the video and quickly cleaned his hair off the floor. Putting it into a baggie Andrew planned on asking his Mom if it was enough to donate to the Kids For Cancer Society.
Andrew uploaded his video as a response to Amelia’s. Neither of them holding the knowledge that thousands of other teenagers would follow suit and shave their heads for a girl they never met.
