I am never doing that again. I repeat that phrase in my head as a bunch of tiny little dwarfs take their time drilling into my skull, well at least that’s what it feels like.

I cringe in disgust once I look in the mirror, my mascara is smeared under my eyes, my hair’s disheveled in all sorts of directions, and my breathe stinks of alcohol. I don’t even wait a second to jump into the shower and let the hot water envelop my body, I scrub every inch of skin and remove my makeup. There, now I look like a presentable human being. I get dressed and make my way downstairs to find my mother reading a book in the living room.

“Mom?” She tears her eyes away from her book and focuses her attention on me.

 “Yes, sweetie?” She replies.

“Who brought me to my room?”

“Oh honey, Cole did he didn’t want to wake you from your sleep.”  She answers. “He’s such a sweet boy, he actually dropped something off this morning.” What the heck was Cole doing up in the morning and why did he bring me something?

“What is it?” I ask, the curiosity consuming my train of thought.

“It’s over there on the kitchen table.” She says as she gets back to her book dismissing me. I find a box with a cute little pink bow neatly placed on it. I remove the lid and find a bottle of water, a banana, a container of Advil, and to top it all off a card.

 Hey Pookie.

So me being the thoughtful, nice, amazing, generous human being I am I decided to give you stuff to get over your hangover seeing as you’re new to all this and you got completely shit-faced last night. Make sure you take the Advil and drink a ton of water and eat the banana I gave you because I said so, and if you listen to me you’ll get better, I promise.

From Cole the most thoughtfulest boy you’'ve ever met.

I smile as I skim through his barely comprehensible handwriting. My stomach knots as I think of how I’m going to tell him about my cancer, he’s doing all these things for me I actually feel bad for not telling him, but then again maybe it’s just the hangover making my stomach knot. Yeah let’s just go with that one so my guilt doesn’t eat me alive. After I did what he told me I pretty much slept like a baby the whole afternoon, well what was left of it anyways condsidering how late I woke up.

“Get up.” I hear a deep voice demand as they shake my shoulders attempting to wake me up.

“Go away.” It definitely wasn’t Cole, he doesn’t sound like that, it was probably Lukas.

“I’m seriously tired of watching this disease eat you alive. As cliché as it sounds it’s taking away the light in your eyes, all you do is sleep and cry. C’mon Katie don’t do this, your life could be taken at any given moment, do something crazily unbelievable because I’m sure you don’t wanna die knowing all you did was watch teen wolf and eat your weight in ice cream. “ I sigh in defeat knowing he’d won. “Meet me downstairs in 10 minutes we’re doing something fun today.”

“Fine.” I throw on a pair of shorts and a loose fitting V-neck.

“Let’s go.” I say as I jog down the stairs and we both head out the door to Lukas’ old beat up red Toyota.

“Why don’t you just ask mom and dad to get you a car?” I question him.

“Because Katie, I’m sick and tired of always relying on them for stuff, I want learn to be independent, I got a job lined up in California without dad’s help.”
