Léna
"Well this can't get any more awkward" I muttered.
Here we were. Nine of us. Sitting around the big table. Again. Eating awkwardly. In silence. Again.
"Tell me about it" Elijah muttered from beside me. We shared a look before shoving another slice of garlic bread in our mouths.
"It's not awkward, it just, eh, not comfortably silent" Levi intervened. He was sitting at the top of the table, per usual. Except he had his girlfriend to his left, beside Isaac.
"That's awkwardness Levi" Líon stressed as he played with his food. Levi didn't say anything but I saw him sneak a glance at Kate who did nothing but stare at her food. Not gonna lie, I felt bad for the lass. But we continued to eat in silence.
Once everyone had finished I could sense things about to get really awkward.
"Um, Léna" I looked up at Levi who called on my name hesitantly. I raised a brow as he glanced between me and Kate and suddenly my eyes grew wide.
"Would you and Kate mind preparing the dessert in the kitchen, while me and the boys bring the dishes out to the utility room?" He asked with a pointed tone.
I stared at him for a moment, debating whether I should kill him or if I should do as he says and save the poor girl the trauma of witnessing her boyfriends murder.
I decided with the latter.
With the unfortunate decision made, I stood up from my chair and looked towards Kate who was staring at me also, wondering whether I was gonna lave or bring her into the kitchen. I smiled and her and motioned her to come so she stood up.
"Follow me" I said politely before turning around in my heels and walking into the kitchen. I could hear her footsteps close behind followed by one of the guys shouting 'Good luck'. I walked over to the fridge and pulled out the pavlova. I glanced up as I brought it over the the island and placed it on the counter top. Kate was standing by the door awkwardly, looking around the kitchen.
"Cade makes this" I said in attempt to slice the tension. This caught her attention as she looked towards me with curiosity and eagerness in her gaze.
"Well our mother used to, but since then, Cade has been the only one who could make it like she did" I said thoughtfully. She began walking over towards me with a slight smile in her face. She walked over to the fridge and pulled out the fresh fruit then came beside me, placing the on the counter.
"Her pavlova was the best" She smiled. My heart stopped for a second and I just stared at her, my face completely void of any emotion.
"When I used to visit sometimes with my father as a child, every Sunday evening she would have a pavlova ready after the big roast dinner. It was devine" She chuckled. My mouth lifted up into a shakey smile as I remembered her delicious Sunday roast.
"Yep, she had a way with food" I chuckled. I reached across the counter and grabbed the strawberries and ripped them open.
"Your mom had a way with everything" Kate smiled, grabbing the kiwi. I smiled and nodded my head. We then fell into a comfortable silence as while continued to put all the freshly chopped fruit on top of the pavlova.
