Chapter One

The wind howled as it flew past my ear, sending shivers down my spine as I looked down the street. Something was going on and I had to get to the bottom of it.

I took the first step off the sidewalk into the street, following the puddles of light on the ground where the street lamps helped guide me. Other than myself and a few homeless people, I was alone. This street was notoriously abandoned after a fight between two gangs sent many people to the hospital and others to the morgue.

The sound of screaming pulled my attention to an abandoned hotel at the edge of the road. I quickly rushed forward, hoping to get there before it was too late.

"Stop it, Jake. It's not funny. I could have seriously gotten hurt." A girl squealed. They rounded the corner as I did, catching me off guard and making me stumble backwards.

"Jake, for crying out loud, you're too drunk to even walk. Let's go home." The girl's blonde hair was up in a pony tail and her dress was cut too low. The guy was wearing a blue button down and black slacks.

I watched as she stumbled forward with a very intoxicated boy under her arm. There was no time to waste now, I thought, I have to get inside.

The loud music was bumping and thankfully the bouncer wasn't one to say no to an aristocrat. Even at my young age, I was respected as though I had lived a hundred years.

Walking to the railing that overlooked the dance floor, I scanned it, looking for the one person that I knew would be here tonight.

There she was, dancing in all her glory with every male eye trained to her figure. I rolled my eyes and made my way towards her.

"You know, you should really stop sending me cryptic texts if you're doing just fine." I yelled over the music as I got in front of her. She opened her eyes and squealed, pulling me into a hug.

"Vi! You made it." She said, pulling me towards a booth. "I thought you weren't going to come because classes start tomorrow and you wanted to get a good head start on them, but here you are."

"Yeah Stella, I should be in my dorm sleeping but instead I wake up in the middle of the night to a text from you saying something in the language of old and I freaked." I sighed. "Thanks for freaking me out."

"No problem." She said, handing me a drink. It was damn near one in the morning and classes started in seven hours, meaning I only had five hours to sleep and an hour to get ready.

"Listen, if you're going to stay out here, I'm going back. I really don't want to start this school year off with another hangover." I said, standing up and taking my leave. Stella huffed and crossed her arms.

"Fine, I'll go with you. I just wanted to have one more night of fun before we have to be super strict and religious." She said, grabbing her jacket and slinging her arm in mine.

"As much fun as this place is, we both do not need to be falling behind with our legacies over our heads. This is one of the final years that we will have to deal with Mrs. Fowler." I said.

She nodded. "I can't wait to start actual training next year with all of the true aristocrats."

We made our way out of the club and into the unforgiving cold. The streets were still empty and ominous, giving us both a bad feeling.

"Something's not right." Stella said as we continued down the sidewalk.

I shook my head. "Not at all."

There was a blood curdling scream in the distance that made my bones rattle. Stella looked at me wearily before we both took off into a sprint in the direction of the scream.
