The sirens were loud and clear as they approached, yet she still didn't feel awake. Flashing red and blue lights, yet she thought she would never see true colour again. There was a knock at the door, so the little girl answered. A tall man wearing a uniform bent down with a kind smile, "Hello there, is your mum home?"
"No." she responded, "She said she'd come back, do you know where she is?" The officer felt bad, and had this girl been older, she would have seen that in his eyes. "How old are you sweetie?"
"Me? I'm seven."
"Wow, you're a big girl now huh? What's your name?"
"I'm Sophia, who are you?" The officer stood up and said something to the woman next to him, and while he stepped past Sophia, the woman bent down to talk instead. "Hello Sophia, that's a really pretty name, did you know that?"
"No. But mummy always called me pretty."
"She's smart then, because you're very pretty." Sophia was scared, and anyone that saw her knew it. "Where's my brother?" She asked, and the officer looked confused, "You have a brother?"
"Yes, he's only three, mummy took him with her, but where's mummy?"
"I'm sorry, I don't know, but we'll get her back, don't worry." Sophia smiled, glad to know her mum and little brother were coming home. That was 14 years ago, Sophia is now an agent working with the police force in England. In all the time since that seven year old girl opened the door, she never recieved a letter to know that the person who killed her dad was caught, she never saw her mum or brother again, she only got taken to an orphanage, where she lived up until she was forced to leave because of her age, and that's when she got this job. Sophia had always been a straight A student, and passed her exams with flying colours, but ever since that cold, miserable night, she never trusted anyone again. "Sophia." The boss walked up to her desk, like he did every morning, "How're you doing?"
"Fine. Thank you." She replied, not looking up from her work. "Right, well, we have a case, and you need to pack."
"Why?"
"You're going to London." Sophia nodded and stood, collecting some things from her desk and heading home to pack.[Thirty minutes later]
Stupid traffic. Sophia thought to herself, taking her backpack off of her back and placing it on her couch. She jogged up to her room where she brought two sets of pajamas out of her draws, along with three sets of clothes. She also collected her hairbrush from atop the wooden furnature. From the bathroom, she collected her toothbrush and paste and headed back downstairs, where she proceeded to pack everything in her bag. After zipping it up, she left and locked her house, entering her car and heading back to the precinct.
[Twenty minutes later]
At least my journey was as short as it's supposed to be. She thought, although still not exactly happy. "You're ready?" The boss asked, fully expecting a yes considering she was the best agent they had. "Yes sir, all ready. What am I leaving for?"
"Actually, you're not going alone this time."
"What?" Sophia asked surprised, but mainly annoyed as a scowl stood plastered on her face. "Sir, you know I don't do well with people." The boss nodded, but smiled none the less. "I do, but I don't think you'll mind as much when you see who's coming with you."
"Why not just tell me?" After receiving no reply, she rolled her eyes. "Anthony, I won't go on this mission if you don't tell me for god's sake." Anthony sighed, but his smile remained. "That would ruin the surprise, besides, you won't quit just because this requires socialising, I know you're better than that."
"I hate surprises." Sophia murmureded, but the boss just gave a slight chuckle, much to her annoyance. The wait lasted five miserable minutes, but the surprise person was revealed. "Sophia! I knew you'd be waiting, my apollogies, you're always so quick." A woman said with a bright smile as she descended the stairs, walking over to the pair. "Jade? You had to pair me with Jade?" Sophia whispered as she glared at Anthony, whom only smiled brighter and got in the drivers seat. Sophia opened one of the doors to allow Jade inside, then shut it and walked to the passenger seat at the front of the car, giving one little snicker at her boss as she sat and put her belt on. "Tell me if you need the toilet or a snack ladies, this'll be a long trip."
"Okay." Jade happily replied, whereas Sophia just nodded. With that, they were off. "Why are we going anyway?"
"You didn't tell her?" Jade asked surprised, and Anthony nodded. "We're going to London to catch mass drug dealers. They've been around for about a year now, but they know how to keep low profiles. Until a couple days ago, we had no idea where they could be, but someone photographed the dealers and a buyer in an alleyway. That person was found dead the next day, but they managed to get the photos to us safely before that happened."
"Stop."
"What?" Both Jade and Anthony said at the same time. "I said stop!" With a confused look, Anthony pulled in to the curb. Before any questioning could happen, Sophia was out the car and across the road. The two still in the car watched with smiles as she helped a child up off of the floor, the two older girls who had bullied her running off scared. "Isn't she lovely?" Jade almost sighed, so the boss chuckled. "Yeah, I guess."
"So, why did you pair us up anyway? To help me?" Anthony turned his attention to Jade, answering half-heartedly. "I paired you two together because you're the best agents I have, and this is serious. And, Jade?"
"Yeah?"
"I know how you feel about her, but try and stick to business okay? No funny business in the hotel room, deal?" Jade, for the first time in weeks, gave a little frown. "Yeah, I will, I know how important this is so... yeah." It was quickly replaced with a smile again as Sophia returned. "Sorry." Was all she said as she put her belt back on. "Don't be." Anthony smiled, "It's always good to help eachother." Once again, they were on the road and on their way to work. "So, what's the plan of action then?" Jade asked, leaning forward to listen as though they had to be quiet. "Nothing yet." Sophia replied, which made them both question her. "We need this job done as fast as possible, we're not going on holiday you know?" Sophia didn't reason, instead, asked a question. "What would you two do then?" The pair thought about it, Jade answering. "I'd get straight to business, ask to join, stay there a couple days to find things out, and then finally get them off the streets."
"Wouldn't work." She said as she rested against the seat, her eyes closed and hands behind her head. "Why not?" Anthony asked, so she opened her eyes, but still sat there relaxed. "Because we can't show up out of nowhere and suddenly become part of the biggest drug dealing group in England, that's too suspicious and we wouldn't be accepted."
"Well, do you have any better ideas?"
"I do, obviously." Jade looked at Anthony confused, then back to Sophia. "Care to share?" Sophia once again closed her eyes. "Not really, I haven't finished it yet." With a heavy sigh, Jade flopped back against her seat.
