I wake to a constant beep. Beep, beep, beep. Its aggrivating. It kind of reminds me of a song. I dig deep into my brain but find no idea what song I am thinking of. I don't open my eyes even though they are begging to see the light of day again. Silence, the only thing I hear other than the beeping. I don't even hear myself breathe. I suck in the air, revealing the taste on cleaness and plastic. God, it stinks.
I hear a ruffle of paper next to me. I open my eyes to see what it is. At least, I try. My eyes seem like they are glued shut. I begin to panic. I feel paralyzed, not an inch of me could move. I can feel a tear try and escape my eyes. I suddenly go still and calm down. No, I will not cry at this very moment. Not when I can't move a muscle in my body.
I somehow let out an exassperated scream. Someone with big, clammy hands grabs my left hand. I want to kick and scream but right now, all I can do is scream. After what seemed like forever, I managed to peel my eyes open.
Bright lights. The first thing I see when my eyes are blinded by the intestity. I quickly shut them again. The smell of plastic seems to have gotten stronger. When I open my eyes, I see a doctor standing, leaning above me. I scream and try to push him out of my sight but my arms are still as motionless as a brick in concrete.
The doctor takes the hint and backs away. I begin to feel warmth spread through my body, starting in my toes but quickly turns to a prickly sensation that sends me back to my senses. I finally begin to be able to move my body.
I look around and see my mother in the corner, sleeping in a chair. Her eyes are red and puffy like she has been crying. White boring walls surround me like a blank four-walled prison. I see the person who took hold of my hand and almost smile. Almost.
I blink twice.
What I see makes an thought of a smile leave like a shadow in the shade. ALex's face is almost gravely pale. Dark rings have formed under his eyes like he has never slept. He is still wearing the outfit from the social studies class.
The social studies class! What had happened?
"Where am I?" I quietly ask. I am afraid to know the answer.
"ICU." Aled responds just as quiet as I was. I turn my attention to the doctor.
"Why am I here?"
"You passed out in class." Alex responds instead of the doctor.
"But, it was just blacking out. It was probobly dehyration. How long was I out?"
"Three days." The doctor says.
"But why am I in ICU? I just passed out, right?" I look back and forth to Alex and the doctor. Alex just has his head bowed. Double blink. "Right?" I seems more like a plea than a question.
"Adi," Alex begins quietly.
"You have a tumor in your brain, Ms. Halloway." The doctor interupts. I turn to him, thinking this all must be some sort of sick joke.
"You're kidding right?" I was terrified, more terrified than I have ever been before.
"No. What we thought was surprising was how old this tumor is. It's been in your brain ever since you were three. I can't believe we didn't find it before now."
"What? Does this mean I have cancer?" I can't have cancer. I can't die. I'm too young.
"Yes." I want to close my eyes and wake up. This has to be a dream. It can't be real. I feel like my head will explide. I want to scream. I want to cry. But all I do is freak out inside. On the outside, I just stare at the ceiling blankly. Blink.
