In the city of Paris, a wife of a famous writer, Zelda Fitzgerald, fell down the stairs during one of the banquets most flappers, writers, and artists attended. As the chaos ensued and the people of the party panicked, her husband, Scott Fitzgerald, was nowhere near to witness the incident. Fortunately, Zelda received no permanent damage and was presumed to be able to leave the hospital in a few weeks. What the public did not know, however, was the reason behind the mishap.
Back in the early 1920s, Zelda's life with Fitzgerald was full of adventures and romantic trips around Europe. She would practice painting, ballet dancing, and even writing. Scott, on the other hand, began to gradually spend his time isolated in his cabinet, working on his novel. Deeper into their marriage, the couple faced even more obstacles. Scott had yet to publish a debut novel. The growing anxiety caused his alcoholism to worsen. He became more withdrawn from her in private, while keeping up an illusion of a lucrative relationship in front of the public. Zelda repeatedly tried to confront him about the neglect he displayed towards her. Nonetheless, her attempts resulted in more dispute and infights in the family.
The reality of the state of her marriage caused the stress, that negatively influenced Zelda in her younger and most vulnerable years. Drinking and attending feasts and banquets seemed like the only time she could feel welcome, pampered, and celebrated. In the eyes of society, Zelda and Scott were a celebrity couple, the epitome of successful marriage and careers everybody would strive to achieve. The illusive cover of the nightlife of Paris was the realization of everything Zelda ever wanted. Getting involved in that aspect of the society allowed her to avoid her arguments with Scott and live as a charming girl, free of problems and worries.

It was impossible, however, to stay in the company of her partying friends forever. Neither could the banquets resolve Zelda's conflicts with her husband. At some point, Zelda had to return home. It was after one of her regular hangouts around the city that Zelda experienced another hit from the cruel reality of her relationship with Scott. That night she stumbled upon her husband with another woman. Zelda was hysteric at the revelation. For the next few hours, the couple argued and yelled at each other. In the end, Mr. Fitzgerald dismissed the vexation of his wife and closed in his cabinet with a bottle of whiskey.
The next few days, Mr. and Mrs. Fitzgerald had to attend a wedding hosted by their close friend. That said, Scott Fitzgerald insisted on acting without pretence. At the beginning of the occasion, he flirtatiously conversed with the women around him, ignoring the presence of his wife. That was the last drop of Zelda's compliance. The thought of losing her reputation in the society agitated her. It was the only thing she had left of what she dreamt of, and now she was losing it as well. Despite this, Zelda had no choice but to overlook the humiliation caused by Scott and carry on to drinking and speaking to other guests of the wedding.

At the peak of the celebration, Zelda suddenly wished to get out of the crowded space. She came up to the stairs leading to the lower floor, looking down at the path she was taking. Her eyes were empty of worries and stress of the world finding out about her private life that would usually tug at her nerves. At that moment, she wanted to do away with the reality of her broken marriage and the loss of the respect she used to invoke in her friends. She imagined what Scott would do if she fell down. Would he feel guilty and promise to cherish her, to fix their conflicts? Enjoying the illusion Zelda built in her mind, she blissfully walked towards it. In her drunken state, she stepped down. A light misstep sent her straight to the bottom of the stairs. In a split second, she lost her consciousness.
