Chapter 3
Jake’s POV
Wow. I never thought I would find someone in the same situation. Obviously I knew that there were people in my situation but I never expected to meet any of them. And here I was, sitting in front of…..I didn’t know her name, I forgot to ask her name. “I’m sorry but I can’t remember your name and I never thought to ask before.”
“Oh, no worries, it’s Alyssa. Alyssa Reid. Nice to meet you, again” she replied as she sent me an outstretched hand. I laughed at her weird behaviour but still took the hand.
“Nice to meet you too Alyssa.”
“So who’s the girl?” she asked
Looking up from my cone, I glanced around wondering what girl she was talking about but realized after a few seconds that she was talking about the girl who broke my heart. “Faye. Faye Kelis. She’s my bestfriend, kind of popular, cheerleader, smart but never shows it to anyone but me. It’s sad really.” Sighing heavily I continued “So I’m guessing Mr. Breakup is John”
“How is it that you don’t know my name but you know my boyfr…ex-boyfriend?”
“Oh everyone knows THE Jonathan Taylor. I’ve seen you with him but I never bothered with your name and I’ve never interviewed you for the paper so…” I replied, shrugging.
“Oh.”
She looked so…hurt, as if in a trance state, but snapped out of it and continued licking at her ice cream cone. “So I’m back to being a loser then, or at least totally unimportant.”
I couldn’t take the helpless and dejected look on her face so to cheer her up I said, “Hey what about those twins you walk around with sometimes. I think their names are, erm, I think its Jessie and Mac. You’re not a loser or unimportant, you’ve got friends, unlike me”
Continuing my assault on the ice cream cone, I think over today’s events. I picked up Faye and walked to school with her as usual. I had planned to ask her out since schools out in 2 days; I had loved Faye since freshman year but I was scared of what it would do to our relationship, look where it landed me now.
“What do you mean unlike me?” Turning back to the slightly less miserable, ice cream eating girl in front of me, I reply her question
“Faye has always been my closest and maybe even only friend, even the guys on the paper aren’t really close to me. They’re a bit more than acquaintances but less than friends but we share a pizza once in a while”
The comment about the pizza brought a small smile onto her face which pleased me. She quickly finished her current mouthful and then spoke “If you want you can sit with the twins and me for lunch from now on.”
“Thanks, I guess I need to find some friends some day”
“Your welcome. I’ve finished my ice cream now and I don’t want the tubs to melt so I guess I should be leaving now. It was very nice to meet you, see you tomorrow” she replied, standing up and wiping her fingers.
Still seated, I reply “It was nice meeting you too. See you tomorrow Alyssa.” Watching her walk away, I properly start to go over what just happened. I just shared a booth with one of the prettiest girls in school. She had long beautiful brown locks, shining grey eyes and thin, pouting lips as if she was constantly thinking about something, but they looked fuller when she smiled. I was stunned really, I never thought that she would so compassionate. I thought she would have the personality of a typical It-Guy’s girlfriend: bitchy, stubborn, superiority complex.
As I finished up my cone, I checked my watch and saw how late it was, 7:23. I didn’t realize I had spent so much time thinking. “Bye Lucy” I said, wiping my fingers then waving at Lucy.
“Bye Jake, enjoy the pistachio.”
