Dynasty and Galvin sat down at their table eating dinner while the rain poured down against the windows and roof. The blinds clanked against the windows. Galvin picked at his food and slid his DS from under the table to his lap. He sat on the edge of his seat. "Can I please go?" pleaded Galvin, his feet tapping the floor.
"Are you done with your food?" His mother acknowledged. Galvin sighed, "Almost, but do I have to be?"
" If you want to keep playing on that game of yours then I suggest you do." Her footsteps tapped against the floor and she sat on the kitchen window sill.
The room fell silent once again.
After dinner they walked upstairs and started to play on their Nintendo's.
" I'm really bored. What do you want to play?" Dynasty throbbed Galvin.
" I dunno. What do you wanna play?"
" Mario Kart?"
" Why not." Galvin stuck the cartridge into his DS after Dynasty. The cartridge went into place with a satisfying click. After a few rounds, his thumbs ached and he put the DS down. "I'm going outside. You?" Dynasty nodded and closed her DS as well.
She pulled out her rusted bike, and it creaked out of the garage. She hopped on and began pedaling through the grass. Galvin followed her on his bike, and they set off to the creek. The creek was a well known spot between them. It was filled with the oddest creatures and at dawn and through the night, fireflies would buzz and light up the grass. Dynasty looked around while riding. Squirrels stared and scattered, and the leaves fell and mostly slapped them in the face. After a while of pedaling, the road became harder to ride across and the mud became thicker and washed over the tires. Galvin jumped off of his bike and onto a tree stump, climbing higher onto the branches. Dynasty followed, holding onto a branch. Galvin reached into the bramble of a
hollowed part of the tree and began to look. "Hey Dynasty, check this out!"
"What is it?"
"An old game cartridge. I'm gonna take it home. Let's go"
"Alright."
They were about to jump off of the tree, but suddenly, the ground rumbled.
CRACK!
The branch had snapped. Splinters fell and the kids were falling into a sinkhole. Their screams cut short.
Still,
Quiet,
And almost dead.
