after grayson took his seat in front of me, he sat like a rock staring at mr. wood as he called attendance. god knows why, but i caught myself staring at the back of the boy's head. i guess i wanted to know what he was doing, so i watched him.
"jess armstrong," he said monotonously, as he had for all the other names called.
"here," piped the girl in the front who had tried to get grayson to stay away from me.
the boy sitting in front of me turned his head slightly toward her, and she glanced back at him in return. i slid her a deadpan look, and she must have noticed from the corner of her eye because she turned around to stick her tongue out at me.
"bast asaren," was the next name he said.
"here," i muttered under my breath.
"a little louder next time, bast," was his response to me before he moved on through the list.
i rolled my eyes and folded my arms on my desk before i rested my head on them. i caught grayson glancing back at me, and his response was a jerk to face the front again. i raised an eyebrow, but i didn't question it.homeroom seemed to fly by, mainly because i wasn't paying attention to mr. wood's enthusiastic attendance after i heard my name. frankly, i didn't give a damn. as soon as i heard the bell, i grabbed the strap of my bag and stood up to leave. i slung it over my shoulder and pushed past all the people in my way, but as soon as i got to the door i head a timid voice say "excuse me". i assumed it wasn't intended for me, because it never was. i left the room and started heading down the hallway. i was the first to leave the room, and i soon heard the same voice but a little louder.
"wait! bast," the male said.
i stopped in my tracks and furrowed my eyebrows before turning to see who wanted my attention. it was grayson. what the hell did he want from me? was he blind? i obviously looked more intimidating than everybody else in the school, yet here he was talking to me.
"yes?" was my rather polite response to the new student.
"i, uh...i was wondering if.." he started, a hint of hesitation mixed in with his tone.
"if?" i ushered him, eager to get to my class and get the day over with.
"if you would, uh, show me around later? maybe?" he finished.it was then that i noticed how soft his voice was. in comparison to my deep and husky one, he sounded almost feminine and had a honey-like flow to his words. i furrowed my eyebrows and shook my head slightly, realizing i hadn't listened to his response fully.
"sorry, what?" i asked.
"i was wondering if you'd show me around the school...it doesn't, uhm- it doesn't have to be now, of course, but.."
i closed my eyes as my eyebrows raised, still not fully comprehending his request. my head shook once again as i muttered a response.
"sure."
i blinked my eyes back open to see the slight smile that had grown on his face. i opened my mouth to comment on it, but i decided not to. i pivototed on my heel and waved for him to follow me.
"what do you have first?" i asked him.
"history," was the quick response i got.
he was following quite close behind me, and it shocked me a little. then i remembered he was brand new and hadn't witnessed me freaking out at anybody yet. i breathed out and nodded, although he probably wouldn'tve been able to see it.i led him to the history room where i had to be, and we took our seats. this same routine continued for the rest of the day; i led him to his classes and then went to my own. i only got mad once the entire day, and it was in math when grayson wasn't with me. the rest of the day was uneventful until school fonally vame to an end. i was at my locker, putting my books from the last class i had inside. when i closed the door, i saw a person leaning against the locker next to mine. it was none other than grayson sila, the new student who had begun to annoy me throughout the day.
"can you show me around now?" he asked.
i rolled my eyes as a response and locked my locker before slipping my hands into the pockets of my uniform blazer that all the guys had to wear.
"follow," i sighed.
quickly, i showed him around the school, not really caring to make sure he understood or remembered anything. i was dying to just go home and sleep until i had to make myself dinner.when i was finally done with the tour of the highschool, i attempted to abandon grayson so i could go home. he followed me, however.
"grayson, you're annoying me," i told him bluntly.
"sorry, i just..."
i heard the slapping of feet that was following behind me stop, which caused me to slow to a halt aswell. i turned slightly to glance back at him, and he looked like he was holding back tears. i raised an eyebrow as i stared at the boy, trying my hardest to act serious and refrain from laughing at him.
"you just seemed really cool and i wanted to be friends with you," he blurted out, his voice cracking a few times.
a tear slipped down his cheek partway through his sentence which caused me to soften up my expression a little. he wanted to be friends with me. after a few moments of silence from me and scattered sniffles from him, i sighed and turned around fully to face him.
"alright, sorry," i said softly, trying to put as much remorse as i could in my tone to make him feel better.
he lightened up a little and wiped his tears.
"i'll see you tomorrow," he said softly.
i nodded and forced a smile on my face. i then turned and continued my route out of the school, the smile i'd worn instantly falling off my cheeks. had i just made a friend?
what the fuck, i thought.
