She drove up to the house with the large gate, the immaculately kept driveway gleamed, the paved pathway shining without a scuff. A camera swivelled to observe her, a new model she had seen be introduced less than a month prior, they were not even for sale for the public yet. She watched it wearily but continued towards the entrance. The engine beneath her purring as it slowed to a halt. Stepping off her motorcycle and using the heel of her boot to push down the kickstand, allowing the bike to stand on its own, she practically stalked towards the intercom.
She keyed the call button at the security keypad and glanced around as it dialled. She could feel eyes on her, and reflexively her fist clenched and her shoulder rolled allowing her to feel the cool metal of the gun she had tucked into the waistband of her pants. A skinny flip knife was tucked by her right boob, for emergencies and another in her boot for extra bad emergencies.
There was a beep before a muffled automated voice gargled through the little intercom.
"Welcome to Blackbourne Estate; please state your name and purpose."She leaned towards the speaker hesitantly, wishing that Dr Roberts had just let her access the files instead of talking with the leads. Being social was such a hassle sometimes.
"Canary, sent by OldDog requesting admittance." There was a moment of crackling silence before the intercom spoke again.
"State your serial number."
She frowned but opened her wallet and read from the academy issued ID.
"7 8 15 19 20 2 9 18 4"There was another crackling pause and she couldn't help but let out an indignant huff. You would think that someone who owned an estate would have a good intercom.
She stared at the intercom critically. The model was at least a decade old, the speaker still crackling, but the buttons were not worn down. As she leaned down to pretend to see if it the transmission had worked, she noticed that the back panel was a different colour and material. The plastic seeming more smooth and glossy. But that still did not explain why a high tech academy facility would have such an outdated model.
Unless...Doyle had told her a couple months back of a new trend arising within the security business, people were buying old security systems to protect their homes and assets. Apparently, a well-noted security officer, a Mr Blake Coaltar had suggested the tactic to stop people from hacking into high profile security systems. Unfortunately, as many high profile clients jumped on board, they soon realised that whilst older security systems couldn't be hacked. They could be hotwired. Mr Coaltar was later on arrested for aggravated robbery, fraud and theft, as well as a bunch of other charges that were later brought to the attention of the court. But that still wouldn't explain why the would they would use a faulty system on purpose.
The beep from the intercom and the click of the gate awoke her from her train of thought. She turned and kicked the kickstand before mounting her bike and driving through the gate. The estate was fairly large, tree branches created an over the top canopy protecting the estate from outside eyes. The lawn around her was well kept and pristine. The hedges pruned to perfection, and a pool stood tucked away behind a glass barrier. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw CCTV camera's swivelling to keep her in focus.
The pathway wrapped and curved around the estate before, at last, the large house came into view.Slowing down as she approached the house she saw the true extravagance detailing that adorned the front facade. It was tall, about three stories high, most likely with an attic space. Tall white marble columns and more marble detailing. It had gold accents with even more darker marble used as detailing. It clearly was reminiscent of Roman structures with those soaring columns. Either way, it was expensive.
