A New Me

I stood in the bathroom, clutching the edge of the porcelain sink, trying to steady my hands and breathing. Memories were flashing through my mind. I looked up at my reflection. My bright blue eyes stared back at me and my long messy pink hair. I heard the bathroom door open and I didn't move as my father came up behind me.

He stood there for a few minutes in silence. Studying me, his grey eyes searching me. I didn't dare look at him. "I've never liked that long hair of yours," He whispered in my ear, his breath warm and smelled strongly of whiskey. Dad picked up the scissors that sat on the edge of the sink and he began to cut my hair. I didn't stop him. I just watched as strands of my pink hair fell to the floor. Tears filled my eyes and threatened to slide down my cheek, but I refused to let my father see them. I looked back up at the mirror to find my hair short.

"I always wanted a son, now I have one," My father whispered in my ear and with that he left the room and went back to his drinking. Once I heard the bathroom door click shut I let out my tears. I looked back up at the mirror.

Everything happens for a reason.

I guess it was time for a change. I didn't want to be Elizabeth Grey any longer. Maybe if I was a boy people might take me more seriously. Maybe if I changed everything about me it would make the death of my mother so much less painful. I needed a new name.

Cameron Grey.

I liked that. It was different. It was new.

A new me.
