'Come on Erin we'll be late for the train' we were both sprinting towards the platform. We got there 3 minutes before the train arrived. Around us adults and students where looking at us in disapproval as we made our way to our parents.
'Girls explain yourselves, why weren't you here 10 minutes ago?' My father looks between us waiting for an explanation. We hung our heads in shame. 'Sorry papa we woke up late' I mumbled.
He clicked his tongue. 'I hope this doesn't happen again.'
'Of course papa, It won't happen again' I answered with Erin nodding her head next me.'Oh, Albert stop being so moody after all it's Chloe's test today don't ruin the day.' Ahh yes the test great. Not. Luckily the train the train came at that moment distracting my dad. Me and Erin clambered aboard and went to find a seat. We settled down and watched New York fly by because our neighbourhood is one of the first to be picked up, we had a long trip ahead and a lot of stops.
So I guess I should introduce myself. My name is Chloe Phillips and I am 18 years old. I have dark brown hair with near to black eyes.
Today is a special day for me. Testing day. Testing day is when every student who is 18 gets tested to find who their match would be.My best friend Erin Turner is 17 and doesn't turn 18 till next month. She'll be taking the test in five months time as it comes around twice a year. Erin has light brown hair and hazel eyes she also looks younger than she is making everyone let her off things as when she's with me I have to be the "responsible" one. *Sigh*
We arrived at school with the rest of the kids in New York. We said goodbye to our parents and got off towards the prison *cough* I mean school.
We walked in with the rest of the students. Me and Erin hurried to our lockers which are conveniently next to each other. I got out my school tablet and just about to close it when someone slammed it closed. I sighed and turned to face Darren.
Darren is your typical jock/bully and who has been trying to ask me out for years. 'What do you want Darren?' He smiled smugly and leaned against my locker. 'You know what I want'
'I know and I said no'
His smile dropped but then came back up again. 'You won't be saying that when I'm your match' I rolled my eyes and sauntered down the hall but not before saying 'In your dreams Darren'We walked into our form room a bit early but decided to stay so we would get good seats. Classroom below
I set my tablet up so it connected with the keyboard and mouse. I leaned back in my chair. Everything is done on touchscreen or keyboard now.
My grandad used to talk about how people used pens and pencils to create amazing pieces of art and everyone had their own style handwriting. He died just last year when he turned 85.
The dome doesn't want us to live for too long, so they give us a pill in the food and we pass away in our sleep. Grandad gave me his pocket watch telling me it would help me. I was confused what would a pocket watch that's broken be of use to me.
I was brought back to the present as students flooded into the classroom. Just as our watches buzzed. Our electronic watches have different colours to show what we are. Red for matched, white for unmatched and black for matchless. They also track your every move how nice.
Mr Ainsley walked into classroom right on time.
'Right class, today we find out who your match is. This is what's going to happen. When a dome official comes to collect you, you will line up neatly and follow him, if you aren't being matched you will be staying here for the rest of the day till everyone is back. Got that class?'
'Yes Mr Ainsley' we all chanted. 'Right now that has been sorted, I have sent you all puzzles to do for the day. Please get on with it. You may talk'We were halfway through our fifth puzzle, when an official walked through the door.
'Ahh Mr Phillips the students are ready for you'We all lined up with me being the official's daughter lined up first. We followed him through school to the main hall and where told to sit in alphabetical order. Hall below
I made my way to the rest of the people with P's as the start of their last name.
As more students filed in another official told us what was going to happen. 'So when we call out your names in groups of five. You will be taken to a separate room there you will each be tested individually. You will NOT find out who your matched with till tomorrow night at the matching ceremony. Right now can I have Jessica Anderson, Darren Bands, Joshua Blackly, Sarah Bond and Hannah Cliff'
I watched as those five people, including Darren, got up and walked through the doors at the end. After, what seemed like hours, they called my name. I stood up and walked through the door with four other students. As I was the last one to be called I had to wait till the other four had done their tests.
When it was my turn, I walked into a white sterile room. In the middle was a blue chair and a couple of monitors. The woman taking my test told me to sit down. I made my way over and sat in the reclined chair.
She came over to me and placed a white spot over my heart and another over the pulse point in my neck. Both of these had wires leading to machine. 'Don't worry this is to just to monitor your heart rate.' She handed me a vile of lilac coloured liquid. I drank it and almost immediately blackness surrounded me.
