Disclaimer: Fairy Tail and it's characters do not belong to me.
Lucy was back to writing the novel. And she didn't like it at all. It was that writer's block again. She was already two chapters in. TWO CHAPTERS. Lucy had set a personal deadline for herself, and it was set at the end of September. Another month to go. She was going to finish this goddamn book even if it killed her.
She was seated outside of a cafe. her table was bathed in afternoon sunlight, and people milled around on the sidewalk. A thin iron railing separated her from the masses. A cup of coffee was perched precariously on the edge of the wooden table, and her ever present notebook was sprawled open in front of her. As always, it was frustratingly blank. Her pencil was tucked behind her ear and locks of blonde hair streamed down her neck. She wasn't in Fairy Tail today, as the chaotic atmosphere made it hard to write a romance story. A quiet cafe was much more preferable and it was also the perfect spot for people watching.
She could see a mother dragging her child along as she shrieked rapidly into a phone. She could see a lone girl standing behind a parking meter, her soft red scarf hanging limply around her neck.
She saw a group of guys laughing rowdily as they passed by the cafe, and a frail old man with surprisingly youthful blue eyes crossing the street.
She was so busy people watching, that she never even noticed him approaching her. Her sixth sense tingled, but it was already too late..
"HEY THERE, LUCY!"
"Ack!"
Lucy's knee jerked up in surprise. The table shook....as well as the coffee cup balancing on the rim of the table.
It all seemed to happen in slow motion. The mug dipped to the side, sloshing coffee all over her notebook, as well as her lap. Then, it rolled to the left, tilted over the edge of the table, and fell to the floor with an earth shattering crash.
Luck knelt down and immediately started picking up the shards of ceramic. She felt Natsu kneel beside her.
"No thank you. I can do it myself." Lucy's voice was tight with fury.
"No, let me help. It's my fault really."
The puddle of cold coffee drenched her capris when she knelt down, and Lucy could feel the stain spreading over knees and thighs.
These were new capris too! She thought, glancing worriedly at the light brown stain spreading on the pastel blue material.
Apparently, Natsu knew too. He scooped up the rest of the mug and dumped it into the nearest trash can.
The owner of the coffee shop waddled over to inspect the commotion. when he saw the remnants of his coffee mug in the trash can, he pressed his lips together into a tight line.
Lucy got up, as did Natsu. "I-I can pay for that. How much is it?" she asked weakly.
"32.98" he replied stiffly.
Jeez, that much for a coffee mug? She thought.
Fishing out her wallet, she thumbed through the dollars, and paled. She'd just paid for her coffee (which was now on the ground by the way) and didn't have enough to pay for the mug.
She glanced up at Natsu, sending him a look that would hopefully convey her distress. He looked through his pockets, but couldn't find any money. Lucy felt sweat bead on her forehead. The owner looked at her suspiciously, as if he knew she didn't have enough money.
"You break it, you buy it." He stated, his eyes drifting to her wallet.
"Surely, you can make an exception. Just this once?" Lucy asked sweetly. She put on her most innocent smile and batted her lashes for good measure.
"32.98 , please."
"Ah, well you see..."
Lucy glanced over at Natsu, who had resumed scouring his pockets for change. Lucy could feel the stares of the onlookers burning on her skin. Suddenly, she felt a hand grabbing her elbow and yanking her over the iron railing.
"Sorry sir, but we have somewhere to go!" Natsu hollered. He dragged Lucy along, practically running as he did so. Lucy gaped, unable to process what was happening. What the actual-
"Hey!" The shop owner was chasing after them.
Lucy suddenly became hyper-aware of Natsu's warm calloused hand encompassing her own.
"Crap! Run faster,Lucy!"
And so she ran.
