Chapter 2 Part 1

"Sappira!" I call, "Supper!" The jaguar swiftly moves towards the fresh meat. Eyes glowing in the dim rainforest. Licking her lips as her teeth sparkle. She sniffs the meat and plops down next to it. I sit next to her and scratch her behind the ears. She purrs a low soft growl at the bottom of her throat as she nudges me with her head "Sappira, you silly girl."

I remember when I was 6, my dad left me to look for the man who killed my mom. He dropped me off at the safest tribe in the Amazon. The one of very few that spoke English. He did this to keep me safe. He's afraid of losing me but the truth is I'm not really afraid of losing him... not anymore.

I grew up at this tribe and learned how to hunt, not only for myself but for the rest of the tribe.

I remember the night I met Sappira like it was yesterday. Everyone in our tribe was sleeping so I went out for a quick hunt. It was only a practice hunt so I was looking for sloths, birds, anything. I was 9 at the time.

I quickly moved through the rain forest in hopes for a kill with a little more meat. If anything or anyone looked behind them, it would just be leaves, like the wind across the forest floor. I was fast. Still am.

It was still dark out, but my vision was better than perfect. I scanned the trees for what could be my next meal.

I spot a sloth slowly making its way towards a different branch. It's not that challenging but I need target practice and breakfast.

I slowly raise my bow and remember what the tribe told me. Inhale, aim, exhale, shoot. I aim and take a deep breath, taking my time. I wait for the breeze to run through the forest. Then, I shoot. The sound on the arrow whizzes through the undisturbed air and implants itself in the sloths chest with a thump. I saw the sloths grip tighten and then loosen. Luckily I catch it before it's body hits the ground with a thump.

I check out the sloth to see that it's a pretty clean kill and should be easy to skin. I sharpen my knife against a rock for quite a bit before its use is needed.

Finally I get done sharpening it and skin my sloth... or begin to...

A pair of glowing eyes catches my attention in the thick brush. Before I can react a jaguar leaps from its hiding spot and pins my shoulders to the damp forest floor, claws digging into my collar bone.

Okay no showing fear. They can sense that. Just stay calm.

I scream. Before I can bring force into it, she cuts me off with a strong roar. Spit splattering across my face and rotten breath invading my nostrils. She looks at me with pity as I whimper.

She breaks her gaze by looking at carcass next to my leg. Yes, the sloth! She gets up and circles it until she confirms it's dead.

She tears the sloth to shreds and in the process manages to send blood flying in every direction. No way I'm dodging any of that. I be careful not to make a move.

When she is done-which doesn't take long- she comes up to me and nudges her gigantic head in my hip.

Somehow I got a stupid idea to get on her back and ride her home. And that's what we did.

When I got to the tribe, let's just say they...were not happy to see her. All weapons pointed at the wild jaguar. I yell, "Sappira won't hurt you. Shes my friend and won't harm anyone!" I hope.

Now they worship her like a God and she hasn't hurt one person. Honestly i had no idea if she was trust worthy or not but...whatever.

Sappira roars loudly to snap be back into reality...I daydream a lot...

She's sitting by the camp fire impatiently flickering her tail waiting for me to come. A monkey is cooking over the bright fire. It looks so good my mouth is watering.

This scenery is beautiful. Friends. Family that will love you no matter what. I take a seat on a dry log next to Sappira. Cheif takes his place in the middle of the circle.

"I normally tell you a story every night there's a full moon, but today is a very special day!" Ugh. That can only mean-

"There's a new person joining our family today!" A few people groan but most do it internally. "This is Diallo! He's 15... and a good hunter." He says pointing to the handsome boy sitting next to him.
