Wait, what?

Did Liam just say that Louis fancies me?

I laugh. Of course Lou and I act gay, but we’re not. Louis has a girlfriend, and I have a kid. With a girl. Who broke up with me a couple months ago. “Li, I seriously doubt he was serious,” I say to a very nervous-looking Liam, “I mean our bromance is just that. A bromance. We act gay, but we’re not. And what about El? And me with Liz?” I chuckle again.

I gotta admit, I’m a bit taken aback when he just looks at me like I’m an idiot. When he just keeps staring me down for a minute, I start getting nervous. And start ranting. Awesome.

“Well? Doesn’t Eleanor mean anything? It’s not like Lou’s actually gay.”

Stare.

“It’s a bromance, dude, calm down.”

Lip bite.

“Uhh…Li? What do you know that I don’t?”

Avoiding eye contact.

I jump up from the bed and plant myself on the floor in front of Liam and stare him down until he looks back up at me. “Tell me,” I demand of him, furrowing my eyebrows. Finally, Li sighs and darts his eyes around as if the walls could hear him. “Tell me,” I say again, this time in a whisper.

“I think you should talk to Louis about this…” Li whispers back, guilt all over his face, as he ducks his head again. I flop on my side so that I’m right in his line of sight again. “Liam. What. Did. Lou. Tell. You?” I put emphasis on the pauses between each of my words.

Liam runs his hands through his hair. “Well crap, I said I wouldn’t say anything, but I guess now that I have I can tell you. At least a little bit,” he says in a quiet voice. I nod, and he continues.

“Lou came over to my room last night. He knocked on my door and peeked in real cautiously like he was super worried about something…”

*Flashback*

I look up from the book I’m reading when I hear a knock on the door.

“It’s open,” I call. A second or two later, it opens partway and Lou pokes his head in and looks around quickly. “Hey, nobody else chilling in here, eh?” he asks, his eyes still darting around. I put the book down and wave him in. He nods quickly and comes in, closing the door behind him. He walks over to my bed and sits gently on the edge, and that’s when I know that something serious is on his mind; if he was just coming to visit, Lou would’ve thrown himself across the room and sprawled out everywhere. Raising one eyebrow, I ask him what he’s so preoccupied by. Lou bites his lip, and runs a hand through his messy hair. His usually bright blue eyes are dark, distant, and worried. “Hey, what’s wrong, Lou?” I ask softly, resting a hand on his leg from where I sit on the floor. When he meets my eyes again, I’m surprised to see that Lou looks like he’s about to cry. He takes a deep breath before saying in a voice barely more than a whisper, “I really need to talk to somebody about this. I’m so confused, Li…” I hop up on the bed next to Lou, and he rests his forehead on my shoulder. “Go on, mate, you know I’m always here for you.” I feel him nod against my arm, and he keeps talking.

“So you know how Eleanor and I have been together for a while now, right?”

“Wait, you guys aren’t having problems, are you?” I accidentally cut in, surprised. Lou and El are so cute together, I thought they were fine!

Lou sits up and stares at me, seeming surprised. He shakes his head fast. “No no no, nothing like that. It’s just… agh. I don’t even know where to start, so I guess I’m just gonna jump in here…You know how Harry and I have our sort of bromance, yeah?”
