The Legendary Red Wolf

Chapter 2

Footsteps.

My eyes fly open as the sound reaches my ears, pinpointing them to be entering the clearing, I flick myself off the sofa and over to the window, my eyes land on the intruder and I recognise him. Growling with frustration, another rogue leader come to greet me on my arrival back to the area. Ripping myself from the window I storm out the door and snarl, my annoyance obvious.

"Andrew, what are you doing here?" I ask bitterly, Crimsons steps closer, her muscles tense, she's on edge.

"Can't I come greet my neighbour on her return to the area?" Andrew says giving me a cheeky grin.

"You know I hate it when people come to greet me, I prefer to be alone. Leave now," I state snarling at him.

He steps back, raising his hands in mock surrender but I can still see the slight fear in his eyes, he's grown wise during my time here.

"Calm down there Red, I'm friend not foe."

"Leave me be Andrew," I mutter and turn around to go back inside.

"Unfortunately I can't do that," Andrew whispers regretfully, paw steps fill the afternoon air, surrounding the clearing, spinning back to face him I am greeted by the sight of wolves stepping out from the trees.

"Andrew what have you done?" I growl, my tone angry but also a little hurt that he would do this.

"I'm sorry Red but they caught me and my mate, I had no choice," Andrew apologises sorrowfully.

A growl of frustration escapes my lips, I can't be angry with him. He's doing what he can to protect his mate. Darting back inside, I lock the door and am quickly greeted with bodies flinging themselves at it, it's a steel door you morons, I shout inside my head. I nearly forget the windows till I hear the glass get hit and splinter, leaping across the room I press the button and the windows slammed closed with a bang. I fall back onto the sofa with a groan, can't people just leave me alone, I'm expecting this is the Alpha's search and capture unit. Well no one is getting in here without a bulldozer, or at least a jack hammer. With that in mind I decide to doze whilst keeping my ears alert and listening to the sound of the wolves' angry growls.

"You know it's our birthday tomorrow, right?" Crimson comments out of the blue.

"Is it really 8th May already? Wow time flies," I reply

"We should be outside at midnight tomorrow, we should shift then."

"We will be, don't worry," I tell her determinedly.

Roughly two - three hours later I'm awoken by a loud noise and the cabin begins to vibrate, listening I figure they've gotten a jackhammer. Did they read my mind? With a heavy sigh I stand, I grab my flask, putting it in my back pocket and a banana which I eat and throw in the bin as I enter the kitchen like area of the room. Pressing a button a section of floor raises slightly and I pull it back, revealing my tunnel and the secret hatch in the floor. I drop down, pulling the hatch by the metal handle on this side and clicking it closed before taking off along the tunnel at half speed.

About a minute later the tunnel comes to an abrupt halt, pausing I listen to the area above for any sign of wolves nearby, but they're all at least half a mile away. Pushing the hatch open, I pull myself out and start running once more going south. I should never have come back here, and now that I have I am aware that I will have to abandon this section for good. A howl breaks the relative silence of the afternoon and I could hit myself right now for being so stupid and forgetful.

"Shit, I forgot to hide my scent," I curse myself

Now they had my scent, they were following me, throwing a glance behind me I see them gaining ground quickly. I can't be captured, if he is my mate he'll never understand, I don't want to hurt him but I just can't be his. I begin to panic a little, pushing myself to go faster, reaching my limit and the wolves being in their wolf skin are faster and are now nipping at my heels.
