Soon, filing income tax returns may get easier with pre-filled forms

Taxpayersmay soon get relief from the hassles of filling up (I-T)return forms. Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairman SushilChandra on Tuesday said the forms might soon come "pre-filled".

This would also enable the government toprocess it faster, Chandra said on the sidelines of an eventorganised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).Apart fromthis, the tax department is trying to ease the process for theassessee, he said. "We are working towards completing theprocessing of a return within a week," he said.

"Under a simplified returnformat, returns with declared incomes up to Rs 5 million would be asingle-page document. It would hardly take time to fill up," hesaid. Efforts are also being made to provide PAN in four hours, hesaid.On tax avoidance, he said only 0.5 per cent of cases had beentaken up for scrutiny.
