I sat on my bed looking out the window at the kids playing in the street. The Erudite towns were filled with houses, all very similar but never the same. My whitewalls bothered me, with their blankness. I'd prefer something beautiful. Deep green like emeralds or indigo like the sky during a storm. Anything but white. White is just everso blank. It begs for you to deface it. As if that were ever an option for me.

I had absolutely nothing to do here. My homework was finished. It always was. My homework for next week was finished too. That's what we do in Erudite. We study and when we are done studying we study some more. I glanced back outside at the children in the street. They were playing hopscotch but instead of normal rules, they played special Erudite rules. The player has to solve a multiplication problem ever hop they take. I used to hate it because I would always lose, just hopping to my heart's content and telling the other kids to shove it when they'd yell math problems at me. I absolutely despise this Faction. I wish I could talk to Troye about it but I won't be let over the bridge to see him until tomorrow.

Troye is my twin brother, not my boyfriend or anything. That's gross.  He lives in Candor with my father. My mother and father had us before they turned 16, before the Choosing Ceremony. Much to Troye and I's dismay, at the Choosing Ceremony they thought only of themselves instead of us.

Alright, I couldn't take it any longer. I didn't care if I was allowed to visit Troye or not. I was going to but I didn't dare walk downstairs. My mother would surely know where I was going. I chose instead to slowly slide my window open as quietly as possible and step out onto the ledge. I shut the window behind me before jumping down into the green grass of my front yard. All the kids in the street stopped to stare.

"Aren't you supposed to be studying?" questioned a little girl, pushing her glasses up her nose.

"Aren't you?" I replied, my monotone voice stretching a reaction of worry across the girl's face.

"Oh um, yeah...maybe?" she said, looking to her friends for guidance. I laughed.

"The point isn't both of us studying, the point it neither of us. PLay, books will always be there." I said before turning and jogging off behind the house. I could hear a conversation break out frantically between the children as I left. The breaking of the system filled me with glee and all I could hope for was that my mother never knew I said those words out loud.

A short strip of land dropping into a valley lined the backside of my house. The middle of the valley hit a river bed which the bridge that connected Erudite and Candor stood over. A bridge that was crawling with guard who I could not let see me. I stooped down and crawled toward the valley in the tall grass trying not to be spotted by the guards. I successfully made it into the valley without anyone noticing me. I quickly hurried from the tall grass that was in plain view to the safety under the bridge. The river wasn't too wide but it wasn't short enough to jump over. I took off my blue converse and white socks and held them in my arms as I waded across the river. The water was cold as winter and sent tingles up through my ankles. By the time I reached the other side I couldn't feel my toes so, I didn't bother to put my shoes back on before sprinting to my brother's house.

I carefully climbed up the brick wall to my brother's room and slid the window up, stepping inside. Upon my abrupt arrival in the room I realized the human that stood before me in Troye's room was not Troye. Instead it was someone with jet black hair, very unlike Troye's. He also had seemingly forgotten his shirt somewhere else. The mystery man was lifting weights before I so carelessly came through the window. He tensed up as he heard my clumsy arrival. He turned his gaze toward me, his murky green eyes meeting mine. I tried my very best to keep eye contact, even though I could see his very sweaty torso in my peripheral.

"Um, Troye...?" he said slowly, signaling for my brother to walk in from the hallway.

"What Peter-" Troye started as he walked in the door. I looked at him with wide eyes. "oh fuck," he mumbled as he looked at Peter. "Juniper, this is my friend Peter. Peter, this is June, my-"

I knew he was about to say sister. Sometimes my brothers habit of telling the truth was so inconvenient. I quickly interjected, "Cousin! I'm his cousin. Hi, hello."

I looked around awkwardly trying and failing to keep my eyes off away from Peter's sweaty chest. Troye sighed as his phone rang and excused himself to go answer it, telling us he would be right back. I glanced at Peter which resulted in him throwing a smirk my way.

"Like what you see, Glasses?" he asked. I pushed my wide, black frames farther up my nose and shrugged, staying quiet. He laughed and rolled his eyes. Typical. Another man with an ego and he's a Candor so, that explains most of it.

Troye came in and started mumbling the beginning of an explanation when I started to wave my hands around, doing my best to signal him to shut his mouth. I didn't want him to tell this random boy about our situation. We could not tell anyone, the officials made that very clear. Especially not here in Candor where people always tell the truth. If Peter ever got asked about us he wouldn't have a choice but to tell the truth. That could be seriously dangerous. Peter saw my flailing and chuckled a bit, eyeing me up and down.

"Um...I guess I'll see you tomorrow, Troye." I said awkwardly before slipping back out the window.

----

I had stumbled clumsily back through my window and shut the curtains just in time for my mother to walk in my bedroom unannounced.

"June, darling. Why are you all wet?" she asked.

"Oh, just an experiment for school," I said. The lie rolled right off my tongue. Good thing I stayed with mom in Erudite and not with dad in Candor, I'd never make it in Candor. Mom said her goodnights and left my room, shutting the door behind her. The last thing I thought of before falling into my restless sleep was that boy that was in Troyes' room. I just hoped Troye kept his big mouth shut.
