Carrie's POV

I woke up around 2 am, unable to sleep. I walked quietly downstairs making sure to not make much noise in case Mackenzie or Isaiah would wake.

I walked into the kitchen, turning on a dim light. I picked out the note and necklace in the trash can, not wanting to throw away the memory of the necklace.

I clenched my fist together with the necklace between my fingers, letting a few tears roll down my cheeks.

I unraveled the crumpled up piece of paper, reading the note Mike wrote again. Quickly I went upstairs and grabbed my phone, dialing the number.

The phone rang a few times before there was finally an answer and immediately, I regretted calling.

"Hello?" Mike wondered groggily.

I didn't speak for a few seconds. Just breathed.

"Hello? It's 2 in the morning. Who is this?" He asked.

"It's Carrie." Is all I could get out.

"Oh, hey. Uh...I'm surprised you actually called." He said.

"Me too. What do you think you're doing snooping around my house when my kids are alone?" I whisper yelled.

"I'm sorry. I was hitting myself about that after it'd already been done." Mike admitted.

"Let that not happen again, huh?" I rolled my eyes with his answer. "What do you want exactly?"

"Okay, guess we're gonna get straight to the point here. Well I wanted to talk about...." He stated as he wondered about a name.

"Mackenzie." I sighed.

"Right. She didn't tell me her name." Mike answered back.

"What about Mackenzie do you want to talk about?"

"I wanna get to know her. I want to get the chance to know who she is and what her favorite things are, I want..." Mike was saying as I cut him off.

"No. You do not just get to come back when you feel like it and tell me you want to get to know her. No." I said in a louder tone.

"Carrie, I'm not really asking. I wanted to show you respect by reaching out and telling you this is what I want. I'm not saying that we have to tell her right away, but I want a chance. Please, Care?" Mike begged.

"You can come over tomorrow but not a peep about you being her dad. See you at 10." And with that, I hung up.
