“Hey. Do you have a map? It seems that I’m lost in your eyes” Caleb stated in an attempt to lure the brown-eyed Bambi.
“I’m sorry, but I’m married” was her response as she flashed him her wedding ring.
Confused, Caleb questioned her, “Then what are you doing here, in a single’s bar? And where is your husband now?” He refused to believe she would come here if she was already hitched. She replied that she was the designate driver for her friends as it was her bachelorette party. However, he could tell she was lying because she refused to meet his gaze. “Well, can you at least tell me your name?” he asked her. Once she got her identity, he would do some internet searching to see who she really was.
“I guess there’s no harm in that. My name is Allison.” she stuck her hand out to shake. Instead, he swiftly took her hand in his grasp and gave it a chaste kiss. Annoyed, she pulled away immediately. “And as I have said,” she said with malice, “I’m married!” With that she turned around and stormed off.
When Caleb got home he opened the website. Notifications shone against the blue and white background. Ignoring the fact that Steve Ackerman’s birthday was today and that Kitty Longo had for the umpteenth time invited him to play some idiotic game, Caleb dragged his cursor to the search box at the top left corner. He began to type Allison until her realized he had no clue what her surname was. After an hour of searching for those café-brown eyes, he realized she might go by a nickname. He quickly typed in Ally and found her and her doe-eyed countenance as the third result. Clicking on her profile, he searched around her page and did what some would classify as “stalking”. His justification was that he only wanted to figure out why she had lied.
In the about tab of her profile page he found the name of the man to whom she was married. Michael Godleski. He double-clicked on his profile to scroll through. Reading through posts people had made on his page, he came to a realization. With wide eyes, he clicked back to Ally’s page and hit the button. A notification popped up. Friend Request Sent.
Ally sat in her studio apartment, in front of her computer, reading about the her friends who recently had children, some people who here having “literally the worse day ever”, in verbatim, and at least one million (that’s a hyperbole) cat videos people thought they just had to share or the world would end. Suddenly, a ding sounded from her computer and the number one in a red circle appeared next to a silhouette of two people on the top right of her computer screen. Opening the tab, she read “Caleb Moore has sent a friend request”. Puzzled, she clicked on his name which brought her to a profile page. On that page she saw a picture of the man who had hit on her at the club. “I told him I was married! Doesn’t this man ever give up?” she wondered. Deciding that accepting the request could do no harm, she clicked on the button. Almost immediately she received a message. “Can we meet up?” it read, “I’m the guy from the club. I really need to talk to you.”
A week later Ally Godleski and Caleb Moore met at the local café which was situated conveniently between the two.
“So, about what did you want to talk to me?” Ally questioned Caleb.
“Why did you lie to me?” he started interrogating, “You said you’re married. But I know that’s not true, I saw Michael’s profile.”
She sat there astonished; an eerie silence hung between them for several minutes. Outraged, she stood up, threw a couple crumbled-up bills on the table, and, like she had at the club, stormed out of the coffee shop. This time, Caleb ran after her. Gripping her shoulder, he spun her around.
“What do you want from me?” She screamed at him, tears at bay. No one was around to witness this exchange as it was still bright and early. “Do you want me to tell you that he’s dead? That Michael, the man I was in love with, nay, the man I’m still in love with is dead?”
Standing shocked at her outburst, but not so much the context, he replied, “Why would you keep insisting that you’re married when you’re a widow?” He had no clue why he was so interested but something about this woman had him hooked. It was probably those gorgeous eyes that, at the time, were filled with tears threatening to spill.
“I’m still married to him, whether he is alive or dead. He will always be in my heart and no one can replace him.” she spoke with a dead tone.
At a loss for words, Caleb stared back at Ally.
Minutes passed until she dropped a huge bomb on him. “I’m pregnant. I’m pregnant with Michael’s child.” She had no idea what caused her to tell him this information. “And he didn’t even know. I never got the chance to tell him that we were having a child.” With that, she collapsed into Caleb’s strong arms. He embraced her as she sobbed into his sweater. Petting her hair, he coaxed her to calm down with murmured words.
