A Story After a Story: A Fault In Our Stars Fanfic

Chapter 19

Jess's POV:

I wake up and groan when I realize that we have school again today. I guess my dad will have to pick up my mother from the hospital. I forgot that Augustus is still asleep beside me, so I gently nudge his shoulder in attempt to wake him up. He stirs a little beside me before rolling onto his other side. I jump on top of him and start to shake his shoulder roughly.

"Gus, get up! Ugh, we've got to school!" I say falling back on the bed and my hair flies all over my face.

I look up and Gus sits up, his hair is a mess and his eyes are red and glossed over. He honestly looks a little lost for a moment before he rubs the sleep out of his eyes. I smile at how cute his 'morning look' is, and then climb off the bed.

"I guess I will head over and get ready. I'll meet you outside the house in a few." I tell him before pecking his soft lips and climbing down out his window and down the large tree.

I unlock the front door and call out to see if my dad was home, but only silence responded. I sprint up the steps and take a quick shower before slipping on a pair of light wash jean shorts, my Green Day shirt, snd my black on black Vans. It was just school so I wasn't overly concerned about my appearence. I must've missplaced my hair brush, I think to myself, before basically tearing my room apart in search of it. I threw my covers off my bed, and looked in the bathroom and it still wasn't there. Finally, I looked through my drawers of my desk, where I found it in the very bottom drawer. I never thought that would be there... Upon discovering my brush, I also discovered something else with it.

I pull out a photograph buried under some papers and see it was me and my bestfriend from back home named Monica. She and I stood together on the beach, and I recognized it from the trip we took last year before I left. I can't believe I forgot about Monica! I will have to call her later and invite her up to go out for a bit to meet some of my new friends.

In my recent discovery I must've lost track of time because Gus had to come up and drag me out of my room becasue we were going to be late. The walk to school went as normal- we held hands and talked about random stuff.

As soon as we got to school though, things managed to take a dramatic change for worse. Gus and I walked through the front doors toward our lockers when I heard my name being called from down the hall. I looked toward the voice and spotted Leo running toward me. Apparently Augustus noticed also because his eyes darken at the sight of him.

"Jess! Wait! I have to talk to you." says Leo. I just stop and give him a hard glare with my arms over my chest and Gus standing firmly behind me.

"Hey, I want to apologize for the way I acted. It was completely wrong, and I realize that I made a huge mistake, you are really what I want. I just hope you will take me back." he says to me and then reaches his hand out to place it on my cheek, but I react faster. I immediately slap his hand away and I feel Gus tense up behind me.

"You hurt me Leo, and I've moved on to someone I'm much happier with. Maybe you should do the same." I snap at him and then drag Gus down the hallway fuming at the fact Leo thinks all he has to do is talk sweet and I will just come crawling back to him.

"Just ignore him Jess, I wont ever let him near you." Gus says to me cupping my face in his hands.

"Thanks Gus, I would never go back to someone like him. Plus, I've got someone so much better now." I reply to him with a smile.

Of course Dan walks past in the hallway and pushes into Gus making him stumble forward into me, but Gus just ignores him which I am thankful for. I don't feel like dealing with any more issues today.

"Hey what would you say if I invited my best friend Monica up from where I used to live? She had only moved there about a year before I moved, but we really connected. I haven't seen her in ages and I want her to meet you." I tell Gus on the walk home from school. 

"Sure, why not? I would love to meet her. Invite her up for a girls day or something and then we can head to dinner that evening." He says with a shrug.

I smile back up at him and reply with a "Yay!" We walk the rest of the way home in a comfortable silence and I notice that the weather is starting to get cooler. I hate winter...

When we arrive home I notice my dads car is in the driveway and I get excited because that means my mom is home. I kiss Gus goodbye and then run up the front door.

"I'm home!" I call out.

"In here!" my mom calls back.

I walk into the living room after dropping my bag on the steps and see my mom laying on the couch under a blanket.

"Good to see ya mom." I say giving her a quick hug.

"Good to see you to." she replies hugging back.

"How are you feeling?" I ask her handing her her cup of tea from the coffee table.

"Tired. I think I may take a nap soon."

"Alrighty, well, you take a nap, and I will go get some homework done. See ya later." I say to her exiting the living room and heading to my bedroom. Things feel like they are finally starting to fall into place.
