CHAPTER 1

The hall of the upper floor of the all boys junior high school was almost empty. Except for a few remaining boys here and there, running from inside the classrooms in their haste to go home and a few teachers that were also hurrying towards the faculty rooms or on their way downstairs.

But the tall 9th grader was not in a hurry. One hand held on to a basketball, the other massaged his jaw where a darkening bruise was beginning to turn purple. Drops of blood stained his rumpled and dirty uniform, his black shorts were torn in a few places and his knees were scraped.

Nevertheless, he walked nonchalantly, like coming from a triumphant match.

He could barely hear any sound from the emptying classrooms. Only his echoing footsteps could be heard when the last of the other students have already ran towards the school buses and the parking lot for those even richer than most to have their own private cars or pick-ups. But Phana didn't care much. He just wanted to walk slowly, smiling from the scuffle he was just in, knowing that whoever decorated his face with the bruise had it so much worse.

"Meooww " came the soft sound of a cat as he was nearing the stairs.

"Meoowwrr " the cat was obviously distressed and the boy who everyone thought of as a bully hastened his footsteps to see what the animal was all about. He was about to turn the corner into the stairway when he heard someone else's voice.

"What's wrong little one? Are you lost? "came the voice of another male student.

"Where is your home? " the voice continued, as Pha slowly peeked and watched.

It was a junior, perhaps, an 8th grader who he have noticed in school but whom he does not really know. He was not tall, certainly not as tall as he was but he was not really short either. He had on a pair of round glasses that made his face look like that of a much younger kid and he was sitting on the floor of the landing between stairs going to the ground floor, a black and white kitten on his lap.

"Are you homeless little kitty? " the smaller boy's voice was soothing as he gently rubbed behind the kitten's ears. "But , I can't take you home with me. We have lots of dogs who will bite a little kitten like you. "

Phana watched, mesmerized at the boy's affection and gentleness towards the wayward kitten. He could see the anxious face of the boy who continued to rub behind the little cat's ears while the kitten had its eyes closed as if it was enjoying the attention.

"Meow, "

"Oh, don't give me that pleading, please. "

Phana looked as the boy sat there, conflicting emotions clearly written on his face. But the cat was already at home in the boy's lap, its front paws somehow clung on the boy's wrist. Pha could not take his eyes off what he was seeing. He could see that the boy was thinking, trying to decide on something and as he looked up, Pha quickly stepped back, afraid to be seen; though he did not know why he wanted to be hidden.
