"Hello? Hello? Can you hear me?" I opened my eyes. A man stood before me. "Who are you?" he asked. "I....." I began to say. A throbbing pain in my head kept me from speaking. "Ow," I rubbed my forehead.
"What happened?" I thought to myself. I looked down. I was in a hospital bed and hooked up to machines."Are you going to answer me?" the strange man asked. "I...I don't know," I mumbled. Who am I? Why am I here? "Who are you?" I asked him. "He dug into his pocket and pulled out a small card. It was a driver's license. "I must be Terrence Carter," he said. Terrence was wearing what looked like a torn up suit. His hair was matted while his face was covered in soot. Do you know what happened?" I asked; my voice still raspy. "No," he replied. "I was hoping you would."
I adjusted myself in the bed, and another sharp pain shot through my back. "Ugh," I yelped. Terrence studied my face as I took deep breaths to help the pain. "We need to leave this place," he finally said. "We need to see if there are any others." How was I supposed to explore like this? "Okay, I can try," I grunted. Terrence grabbed my arm and helped me out of the bed. I winced as I stepped onto the cold floor with my bare feet.
I leaned on Terrence as I limped out of the room. I glanced behind me, and saw paperwork on the door to my hospital room. It read, " Jack Sanders." Terrence looked over my shoulder at the papers. "You must be called Jack," he said while examining the documents. "Jack Sanders," I thought to myself. I guess that's my name.
Terrence and I walked down the empty hallways of the hospital. The lights were flickering on and off. Blood stained the walls while bodies were scattered along the floor. There was a door at the end of the hallway that had, "GET OUT" written on it in blood. I watched in horror as we walked by. "What could have possibly happened?" I thought. Terrence kept a stray face and showed no emotion. He looked straight forward the whole time and continued to walk. I tried my best to keep up as I limped and hobbled behind him.
We began to reach the exit. Half of the walls were torn down. Terrence stepped on the pile of rubble and motioned for me to follow. We walked out into the open and my eyes began to widen. I gasped in shock. Everything was destroyed. Buildings had been burned to the ground, lampposts and road signs were knocked over, the roads were all broken up, and there were still some houses on fire. Thick smoke filled the air. There was not another person in sight. Terrence coughed. "Where is everyone?" he asked. "I don't— ," I started to say. The throbbing pain came pounding in my head again. I winced in pain.
"What happened to me?" I asked. Terrence pulled out the paperwork. I hadn't noticed that he had taken it with him. "Car accident," he said. Car accident? I tried to remember. "It says that you were under the influence of alcohol," he continued. I looked down at my feet. "Drunk driving, eh?" Terrence chuckled. "I guess so," I said. "You and I are gonna get along just fine," he said. I smiled at at Terrence. "Let's go," I said. "We have to figure out what happened and if there are any others." Terrence nodded. "Yes, Jack," he said as he started to walk. "Oh, and Terrence," I began. He turned to face me. "Can I call you Terry?" I asked him. "Sure," he replied. He turned and started to walk again. I followed behind him.
Terry and I walked into the fallen temple.
