More than this

Tomorrow is here...

That’s never a good thing the way I have to live, the things I must endear, the pain I feel. It’s not fair how I have to live in despair while they live in praise and possesses such an ecstatic life. I hope they trip and fall down a well, for all they have done since I since I was born was shame me, their youngest daughter....

“Hey, you worthless thing, get me another beer!” Ben slurred from downstairs knowing he was intoxicated from alcohol. I threw the sheets off my now freezing body, goosebumps trailed up my arms while I sauntered down the stairwell. The familiar scent of alcohol soon filled my lungs as I reached the first level of our “fancy” house.

“Hurry up before I make you!” Ben yelled causing me to jump from my spot on the floor. Ben my supposed-to-be father, was drunk in front of the TV watching a football game. He was once a very successful businessman until he was caught drinking tequila while talking on phone to a client. I don’t feel bad for him, not in the very least. I open up the fridge and pulled out a beer from the bottom shelf and trudged over to him.

“What took you so long?” He angrily snatched the beverage from my grasp.

“I-I fell,” I lied hoping he would believe me.

“You klutz! I knew I messed up when I married your mother, “he snapped and took a sip of the beer. I hurriedly ran upstairs to get dressed for classes before he could say more. I did my route of brushing my teeth, taking a shower, getting dressed, styling my hair, and finishing with my makeup. I wore the ripped jeans and white shoulder less long sleeve shirt that my best friend bought and insisted I wear. I decided not to go all out with makeup and put on mascara and some light lipstick, and left my curly hair hanging down. I grabbed my purple bag and run downstairs to get an apple.

‘I’m leaving out!”  I shouted loud enough so he’d hear across the house.

“Good, I don’t want you here when Stephanie comes over, also pick me some more beer on the way home!” he shouted back, then returned his attention to the TV once more. Stephanie is the she-beast my father married after my mom divorced him and moved away with my sister when I was four. A car horn blared outside signaling my ride was here. I opened my door to see my best friend’s black Nissan in my driveway, I speed walked to the passenger side of his car. He lives right down the road, so it was only a five-minute drive.

“You look great, are you ready to go?” he said as I climbed into the car.

“Let’s get this over with.”

“It’s the first day and you’re not nervous?” Carter asked after locking his car doors.

“Nope, I have bigger things to worry about.” I began to walk towards the school’s front doors. Carter and I met in third grade when he stood up for me while Katherine bullied me because I didn’t have friends. Carter is the type of guy that will hug you while you’re sad and make you laugh. Plus, he’s my only friend and has been since we were in grade school.

Today, we were early, just because we didn’t want to run into the jocks and cheerleaders. I know that everyone made fun of me behind my back, because of my parents, but I choose to ignore it. We enter the school and all my hope depleted. “Hey, how much drinking have you done today freak? I bet your fridge is stocked with alcohol!” Beth Anne said pretty much yelling to getting everyone’s attention just like last year.  All the cheerleaders and jocks were crowded in the hallway and all eyes were on me. Suddenly, everyone in the hall were turning red with laughter, Carter took my hand and we did a long sprint down the hall to safety. By safety, I mean the only spot that rarely had children in it, the library. Carter and I love to go to the library, because its peaceful and quiet there, it's like my second home.

“Good morning, Carter and Kaylee happy first day of school!” my librarian Miss Amber is always hyper, so it’s actually refreshing when I’m around her.

“Morning Miss A,” we both manage to say at the same time.

We continued to walk to our usual spot at the back of the library, we stopped in our tracks. Twice in one day we were shocked to see people where there usually isn’t any. A boy who looked as if he was some type of nerd athlete mix was occupying the spot, our spot. I was in deep thought, but I didn’t realize I was hard core staring at him. All he did was look up from his book and I could’ve sworn that I recognized him from somewhere. He smiled a weird grin like he was trying to figure out what to do in this situation.

“Hello, um you know you’re staring right?” I immediately snapped back to reality, when I hear his British accent. I smile awkwardly to only then realizing that my face was heating up and I was blushing like a tomato.

“Um sorry about that I um I-”

Carter saved me from social interaction, “She was trying to say you’re in our usual spot,”

“I didn’t mean to take your spot, I’ll go elsewhere mate”

“It’s fine, you can stay, we’ll find somewhere else to sit.” After saying that, I began walking away to a different table. Carter gets up and starts to walk alongside me. “Wait, we can share the table, I’ll read this book another time!” Liam suggests like he’s desperate to get away from the thing. Carter looked down at me saying “no” with his eyes, but this year I plan on being around more than one friend who isn’t Carter.

“I guess,” I say while Carter looks confused for a moment, I walk back to the table and sit down across from him. Carter sighs and sits beside me.

It was awkward until Carter broke the silence, “What’s up with the book?”

“My mum and dad expect me to finish it by the end of the week based on their high expectations.” He looks down at the book and flashes a face that’s similar to mine everyday.... sadness.

“Oh, I see you’ve met the new student, his name is Liam Garnder and he’s a senior this year,” Miss Amber came up from behind me and nearly made me jump, but I know I have heard his name before.

“Liam, this is your tour guide, Kaylee Thomas,” I turn around shocked.

“Tour guide?” Carter says trying to think of ways to get me out of this.

“Yes, tour guide, you need to get out of your shell and be social.”

Carter was about to say something, but she cut him off, “oh and she’s doing this by herself by the way.” Carter looks more worried for me than I am.

“Make sure to show him the fountain,” Miss A finally went back to her desk to sort out some fiction books and I let out a sigh. Out of the corner of my eye I see Liam’s smile which really showed off his dimples
"Lee, I'll just meet to in class!" Carter,my only protector left me and speed-walked to class.

“Let’s go, I guess,” as we walk, I prepare for the worst.
