Thorn's pov

I stand outside the filthy cell that my mate and Beta lie within, the mere knowledge that I had my mate put in there is making me crazy.

When I was coming back here I had been planning numerous ways to get the Red phantom to talk but I had no idea she would turn out to be my mate. A rogue, a mystery. Now I feel sick just thinking of what I was going to do to her. What I had done to her. It's true what they say, you don't know who your mate will be and that's why you shouldn't be unnecessarily cruel to people.

"I can't. I have to leave. I'm sorry but he has to let me go. This was why I was running. Why I tried harder to get away. I never wanted this" Red says, her voice is quiet.

I stiffen as my heart squeezes at the thought. Let her go? I can't. She's my mate, I can't let her leave. Why has she been avoiding me all this time? I thought it was strange she was gone so long, now I know why. What happened to you, mate?

The sound of chains scraping across the concrete brings me out of my thoughts, only to make me cringe knowing I put her in them. A few seconds pass before Sapphire slides out of the cell and clicks the door shut after her.

"Sorry Thorn, I couldn't get her to tell me anything. She doesn't trust me, which is only fair seen as she doesn't know me," Sapphire says, sighing slightly, I can see the concern for her Luna clearly. "She relaxed when you left, so I think she trusts me a little but not you, I suppose that's understandable with your past. All I got out of her was that she had to be let go."

"I heard her. She must know that I can't do that. She's my mate. I can't just let her leave. I want to get to know her and love her. I have to get her out of that cell though, I can't stand her being in there" I state my voice low in sadness. "What happened to her to make her like this? And why be more relaxed with you?"

"Thorn, if you had seen her when we caught her, she was so different. She just wanted to get away. I could see the plea in her eyes" Sapphire informs, her voice thick with emotion. "She whimpered and submitted to me. I didn't even try to make her."

"What?! She's never submitted before?" I nearly shout in shock. "Why submit after all these years?"

"I can't get through to her wolf. I can see what she was trying to do though, she was trying to get Sapphire to lower her guard, trying to escape. Even her wolf was scared and it takes a lot to get to us. I'm worried, Thorn" My wolf, Razor, says with fear.

"I agree. It's not good when their wolf is fearful as well"

"Another thing, when we got to the tree line by the village, she tried to get me to stop but I didn't listen, thinking she was going to try to escape. When we went into the village she seemed to have a panic attack. Her wolf had to take over partially, she didn't recede until they were sat in that cell" Sapphire says, her concern and sadness for her strong in her voice.

"My beautiful mate, what has happened to you?" I whisper dejectedly.

Ruby's pov

I eavesdrop on Thorn and Sapphire, giving a half smile as the conversation ends. Oh Thorn, you don't want to know, trust me. If it wasn't for my past and my knowledge, he would have been a good mate, perhaps not the best but I can't judge on the little I know.

I'm pulled out of my thoughts by the door opening and I move my eyes down to my feet where boot clad feet rest, my eyes travel up the figure to rest on Sapphire's eyes that seem to darken in the dim lighting.

"Red, I'm going to undo your chains and escort you to Alpha Thorn's house now okay?" Sapphire tells me more than asks, I hold back a discontented growl.
