"I volunteer."said a voice in the crowd. "Oh! A volunteer? Well, show yourself, young challenger."said Macey, the host of the ninety eighth annual Hunger Games.
A lot has changed in the last century, one of them being that most of the districts were all made up out of aliens, now. There was only one human district left. It's a wonder how this stupid death trap hasn't been banned yet.
Maxine slowly zipped through the crowd and towards the stage.
"NO!" yelled Rosie, traumatised by the cruel thoughts of what might happen to her best friend, Maxine Clarke. Security and some others had to hold the sobbing girl back. She wept and struggled against their firm grip, but at this point, she was far too vulnerable to do anything about it.
Rosie was originally chosen to participate in the Hunger Games, but Max wasn't about to let that happen.
She reached the stage and stood next to Macey. "What's your name, competitor?" Macey asked. "Maxine." Max said, after a few moments of hesitation. "Well, let's give her a round of applause!" Macey said energetically.
Max heard only the sound of what she swore was a cricket's chirp as she stared out over the sea of shocked faces.
"Well...That's unfortunate," Macey said quietly, "Thanks, Max." She said with a slightly louder and more confident voice. Max was then lead off stage by a security guard.
"You have five minutes." He said, opening a door for her. The name Tony sat snuggly in the corner of his name tag.
In the middle of the room, sat her small bundle of friends. Rosie wiped her eyes and looked up once she had heard the click of the closing door.
"Why would you do that?!" Rosie cried in denial. She let out a sob as she engulfed Max in a tight embrace, falling to her knees and bringing Max with her.
"Did you seriously think I was going to let you die out There?" Max asked. She only got a sniff as a result.
Her other best friends joined in on the embrace, turning it into a group hug.
"Maxine Clarke, if you die out there..."Said Chase. You know he's being serious if he uses your full name. "Don't worry, If I die, I'll make sure I put on a show for you." Max said jokingly. She may be a dead girl walking, but she kept her sense of humour.
"We'll be watching you on the Show! Stay safe, Max." said Stephen, or Steph-The-Chef, as Max liked to call the big bundle of innocence.
After a few minutes of silence and peace, Tony came inside and told them that their time was up and that they should say their goodbyes.
Max said what could very possibly be her last goodbye to her friends, then she followed Tony to the door, but she only got about half way.
"Wait!" Chase reached out. "What is it?" Max asked, curious about what his last words to her might be. Chase seemed to hesitate. "Nothing." He finished. Max flashed one last award winning smile and turned around.
By the time she was out of of the door, Chase and Rosie had broken down crying. This wasn't the first time they had almost lost someone in the group, but they may have just lost Max...For good.
Max was lead onto a train. On the train, she saw Macey and a man.She couldn't really say she didn't know him.He was famous. Most girls would swoon over him.He was the challenger from her district in last year's Hunger Games. He'd clearly won, seeing as he wasn't dead. But Max had other things to worry about.
"Welcome back, Player!" Macey said in an annoyingly cheery voice. How is she so excited about this?, thought Max.
Mr.Goody-Two-Shoes, on the other hand, looked exhausted. Probably all of the disturbing things he'd seen last year coming back to him.
"Good afternoon. My name is Gavin." He introduced himself as if Max didn't know who he was. "I'll be your guide for this year's Games."
Gavin talked Max through some things like things she should avoid and how to avoid them. Otherwise, they just got to know each other. He really wasn't the the bad guy that Max had thought him to be. They actually ended up being quite good friends.
They arrived at their stop. Loud cheering could be heard outside. Max peered out of a small window, glaring at the crowd. "Happy to see us die..." She said with a grim tint to her voice.
"I wouldn't tell them that if I were you.You should try to gain a reputation. It'll help you in the Games, trust me." Gavin said. They should have a talk show called "wise words with Gavin Wright", thought Max.
Out of the corner of her eye,she saw the train's automatic doors slide open. She drew closer to them, putting on her best fake smile, and then she stepped outside.
Gavin stood glued to his spot on the train, grinning like a proud dad watching his child leave for their first day of school.
Max looked off to her left. What she saw was supposed to be impossible. A human. Her district was the only human district left...
So how the hell did he exist?
"Hey Gavin?" She summoned her guide. "Who's That? " She asked, staring at the boy with slightly overgrown, scruffy, jett black hair that was tied up in a short ponytail, and eyes that could be described to look similar to the embers of a fire.
"Oh, that's Valentine. I've spoken with him a couple of times. He's a chimeran-human cross."Said Gavin. Max let a quiet "oh" escape from her lips . That explains his human features, beside from his...Strangely captivating eyes, Max thought.
Max caught an alien looking at her, as if she would be It's next meal. She glared at it.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you. That guy's from district three, pretty skilled with a gun." said that boy from before. Valentine, Max recalled.
"Do I look like I'm afraid?" Max asked snarkily. "You should be." Val, Max's new nickname for Valentine, said. "Well, I'm not. Especially not of you,Flame breath." Max stated with confidence evident in her voice.
"Fine, go die out there. It's not like I care, anyway." Val said rather harshly.
I'm going to die out here, thought Max. "C'mon! Get your shit together, Max!" She told herself.
