Society’s secret

In the archive of a little forgotten town called Eden,  that was only miles away from London. There is a diary, a diary wherein a secret was written a long time before of an American woman who moved to London for her father’s business and because of her mother’s death, her mother was born in Eden, but lived most of her childhood in London. She knew something that could have saved lives, but never told anyone because she was afraid that people would think she was crazy, but enough of my narrator talk, read the letter of the woman and find out the truth of what happened on the wedding of Diana Wode

Dear Diary,

My name’s Isabella Rosalinda Vermont and I’m twenty and one. I am the daughter of a very important tradesman named Edward Vermont and his late wife Amelia. One describes me as a pretty plain woman with a mind on her own and a mouth that simply didn’t know how to shut itself. A  woman who can possess a feeling of curiosity that can consume her and I would be a fool to deny what they were saying because I know it’s the truth and I am not ashamed because of it. My mother would disagree; she thought that my ‘careless mouth’ would only bring me trouble and not a man. Well how wrong she was because now In a matter of hours me and Byron Oscar Wode, heir to the Dukedom,  are to be married. But there is something heavy that is weighing on my heart because I know something, I know what happened the night that happened. Maybe the only one who knew the actual truth and I will tell you what had happened that faithful day, but for you to understand that I must go back a few weeks before to the masquerade that was held by the most powerful family in England besides the royals.

It seemed to be a normal  summer day in London; the birds were singing, the sun was shining, a soft wind was caressing the people’s skin and the sound of laughing children were filling their ears. Seems normal to everyone ,right? But it was exactly quite the opposite because today there be held a ball by no other then Grand Hyman Dwan Wode and his wife, Grand Duchess Eugenia Wiley Wode . It was to celebrate the birthday of their two daughters Diana Annabelle Wode and Daphne Alana Wode  , who were finally coming of age and would have their out coming party in form of a masquerade ball . Since the Grand Duke and Duchess were one of the most powerful nobles around London, it didn’t take much of one’s common sense to figure out that many young noblemen had asked the Grand Duke for both their daughters’ hand in marriage. One of the maids, who cleaned the Grand Duke’s study had seen two stakes of letters of possible suitors for the girls. She said that one on the stacks was higher than the other, saying that one of the girls  had more suitors then her sister. Many people thought that the highest stack was for Diana because of her beauty, which was prized by a lot of people. People who had claimed to see the gal,  said that there was no painter alive could possible justify her beauty in a portrait. But even though all were enchanted by her beauty, some of them have admitted that the gal was a bit…..shallow, but the only reason why that she seemed shallow, was that the poor girl couldn’t talk because of what I can gather a complication when she was born. But despite her older twin sister’s beauty, I think that there was a good chance that Daphne had more suitors because she of her quick witted personality. The young gal was quite smart and had many interests like horse-riding, music and archery, which was appreciated by many noblemen, who wanted their wives to be different then the high-society women who only were interested in marrying a rich man, produce a heir and spend their money on silly things. I know that because Byron had told me that he rather have a more a woman who was a hand full then a woman who always obeyed him.

But back to the story because of the ball  that would be held that night, every servant who called the Grand Duke’s estate their workplace was rushing. The ballroom had to be decorated, the orchestra had to be settled in, all the food had to be prepared, the dresses of the ladies of the estate had to be ironed and every single room had to be cleaned  -which I think is something ridiculous, since only the ballroom and the entree hall would be seen  by the guests-, everything simply had to be perfect for the girls ball. The servants were put under many stress, or at least that was what one of the maids, I think her name was Anna. She said that her grace also known as the Grand Duchess was barking orders as a dog who was barking to a few cats and because she was Daphne’s chambermaid, most of those barks were directed at her and Diana’s chambermaid, Grace. In the girls’ dressing room. There was a thick tension in the air. It wasn’t there because the girl were anxious for the ball,  because the tension was there for months long before the ball was announced  according to Anna,  but she didn’t know why.
