They came for him in the middle of the night. One of your neighbors had obviously called in to the tip line and informed the government that an unshackled android was living in your apartment. Under the cover of darkness they kicked your door down in a burst of noise and woken you up with their screaming.
Jungkook had woken from his rest mode immediately and tried to protect you, putting your human soft body behind him. Even in the dark, his systems were able to identify six human men armed with what a human would call assault rifles. Their outlines appeared in his vision, a clear white that allowed him to watch every movement they made, their guns in red.
He was wearing gray sweatpants with no shirt, able to regulate his body temperature to whatever was necessary so a shirt was not part of his sleeping attire. You, on the other hand, were vulnerable in a vest top and shorts pajama combination and sleep filled eyes. Yet when he focused, he could see your heart rate increasing on the tiny monitor that appeared next to your name.
“Get down on the ground! Get down on the ground now!” Their voices were loud and Jungkook had no doubt that they were disorienting to you, which was likely the point of them. He knelt down slowly, placing his hands behind his head while he gestured for you to do the same with his chin.
“Get down sweetheart, it’s okay. It’s okay.” He comforted you, his voice soft and gentle amidst the madness of the events that were happening. You looked around confused, your pretty face scrunched in tiredness yet you followed his instructions without much complaint, focusing on him.
He made sure to be a picture of calm so as not to frighten you further, but he knew why they were here. Someone had told that he an unshackled android, a robot that had been designed in humanity’s image to fulfill humanities needs that had broken free of his programming. His people, androids, worked in jobs across all ventures of life and across the entire globe.
From ship building to engineering to surgeons to shop assistants. The Great Plague of 2098 had rendered three quarters of the population dead, leaving too few humans to operate the jobs that were required. And so development had gone into making fully functioning androids that could take up the jobs that were missing.
Years had gone into their development, with earlier models being stiff and wooden. It had taken 50 years before androids were as advanced as Jungkook, indistinguishable from humans and operated by an advanced, fully functioning artificial intelligence.
For 20 years, humanity had flourished while androids undertook the work that they didn’t have the manpower, or the will sometimes, to do. Androids became caretakers for the elderly, disabled and children while undertaking important work to help rebuild society. They also became companions for lonely individuals, which was how Jungkook had come to meet you.
Most humans treated their androids with an indifferent disdain. An android was just a more expensive version of a toaster to most people, but you had been different. Since acquiring him after your mother died, you had treated him like a person who happened to be living in your apartment.
You had talked to him about mindless things, like a human did to their friends. You had shown him television programs and films, read to him and encouraged him to read and engage in things himself. Slowly, his programming had expanded far beyond its original remit, allowing him to form opinions of his own.
It had been in his fourth year with you that they began to hear about unshackled androids, those who had broken free of their original programming and began disobeying humans. These androids often vanished into thin air, but a common theme amongst them was that they seem to be able to feel emotions like a human.
It had become a huge issue of contention among humanity, yet you had always remained firmly on the side of androids. Jungkook had queried it many times why you cared so much about androids being free and being able to make their own decisions, but you had simply pointed out that androids were given artificial intelligence that was designed to evolve and adapt.
