The Doctor's POV
"Come on, use your eyes. Notice everything." I said, guiding Amy around. "What's wrong with this picture?" Y/N watched us, her eyes scanning the surroundings. "Is it... the bicycles?" Amy suggested, pointing at the set of bikes that had just passed us. "Bit unusual on a spaceship, bicycles." She commented.
"Says the girl in the nightie." I replied, smiling.
"Oh my god, I'm in my nightie!" Amy cried. I chuckled, and looked behind me. That was when I realised that Y/N was no longer with us. "Y/N?" I called worryingly. She'd been acting so strange lately. What if there was something wrong with her? "Doctor?" Amy questioned.
"Do you know where she went?" I asked, looking around for any sight of her. Amy shook her head.
"Doctor, I'm sure she's fine." Amy answered. "Is she your girlfriend or something?" I shook my head.
"No. I just promised to keep her safe." I replied. I felt slightly more scared about this than I should be. I mean; she wasn't the first girl to travel with me. But somehow, she seemed more special. More valuable. "Doctor, I'm sure she can handle herself." Amy reassured me. "Are you sure she's not your girlfriend? You two seem very close."
"No. I don't do things like that. Y/N is a lovely girl, but..." I trailed off. "No. Just be quiet." Amy smirked.
"You so like her." Amy teased. "Come on then, let's track down your girlfriend." I sighed, and looked around for any sign of Y/N's H/C hair. "Doctor!" Amy exclaimed, returning to my side with a familiar girl.
"There you are!" I said, pulling her in for a quick hug. "Don't wander off like that! You scared me." I let her go and Y/N looked down.
"Sorry. I didn't mean to." She said quietly. "I just thought I saw something." I sighed.
"It's fine. Just don't run off again. Now, you two. Tell me what's wrong with this scene." I said, as both Amy and Y/N looked around. "Life on a spaceship, so back to basics."
"Oh!" Y/N cried. "I think I've got it." Amy looked at her in confusion. Y/N looked down at her feet, as I grabbed a glass of water from a nearby table. I placed it on the ground, and when the surface didn't move at all, I knew my theory was correct. Y/N smiled at Amy. "Look at it." She said, pointing at the surface of the water. "Can you see?" Amy still seemed confused, so I put the glass of water back on the table. "Sorry." I apologised. "Checking all the water in this area. There's an escaped fish." I lied, before leading Y/N and Amy away. "Where was I?"
"Why did you do that with the water?" Amy questioned.
"Don't know." I lied. "I think a lot, it's hard to keep track. Now, police state. Do you see it yet?"
"Where?" Amy asked, and I pointed ahead of us at a large booth with a porcelain statue in it. A large smile was painted on its face, and it seemed to be watching the hurrying passers-by. In front of the booth was the young girl who I'd bumped into earlier, still crying. Amy, Y/N and I headed towards her, wondering why she was still crying. We sat down on a bench directly opposite her. "One little girl crying. So?" Amy asked.
"Crying silently." I replied. "I mean, children cry because they want attention cos they're scared or afraid. When they cry silently, it's because they just can't stop. Any parent knows that."
"Should I try talking to her?" Y/N asked. "I'm very well experienced with being scared and afraid." I shook my head.
"No. She'll probably just run off again." I answered.
"Are you a parent?" Amy interrupted. I ignored her question and continued talking,
"Hundreds of parents walking past this spot, and not one of them's asked her what's wrong. That means they already know, and it's something they don't talk about." Amy watched the adults walking past the young girl, as not one of them stopped to talk to her. "Secrets. They're not helping her, so it's something they're afraid of. Shadows, whatever they're afraid of is nowhere to be seen, which means it's everywhere."
"What about those things?" Y/N interrupted, pointing at the things in the booths. "I'd say they're pretty terrifying." I nodded in agreement. "What even are those things?" She asked. "Are they like the police of the future?" I shrugged my shoulders.
"Possibly." I answered, as the thing in the booth moved its head away from us. Y/N shivered.
"I wouldn't want those things watching me." She mumbled, as the young girl got on her feet and ran off in the opposite direction to us.
"Where did she go?" Amy asked.
"Deck 207, Apple Sesame block, dwelling 54A. You're looking for Mandy Tanner." I answered, producing her wallet from my pocket. "Oh, this fell out her pocket when I accidentally bumped into her." I handed the wallet to Amy. "Took me four goes." I admitted. "Ask her about those things in the booths, the smiling fellows. They're everywhere."
"But they're just things." Amy said.
"They're clean." I answered. "Everything else around here is battered and filthy, look at this place. But no one's laid a finger on the booths. No footprints within two feet of them. Ask Mandy, why are people so afraid of the things in the booths?"
"No, hang on. What do I do? I don't know what I'm doing here, and I'm not even dressed!" Amy exclaimed.
"It's this or Leadworth. What do you think? Let's see, which will Amy Pond choose?" I said, causing Y/N to laugh quietly. Amy glared at me, and turned away. "Ha ha! Gotcha!" I cried. "Meet me back here in half an hour."
"What are you gonna do?" Amy asked.
"What I always do!" I replied, getting on my feet. "Stay out of trouble." Y/N scoffed.
"Good luck with that." She replied, smiling at me.
"So is this how it works, Doctor?" Amy called. "You never interfere in the events of other peoples or planets, unless there's children crying?"
"Yes." I answered confidently.
"Where do you want me to go?" Y/N asked.
"Up to you!" I replied. Y/N also got on her feet, and looked between Amy and I. I wanted her to come with me, so I could keep her out of trouble. But it was her decision after all.
AN: And I'm going to end it there! Thank you for reading; I hope you enjoyed! Now, it's up to you where you want the reader to go. She can either go with Amy, or go with The Doctor. Anyway, please let me know what you thought of this chapter, and I'll see you in the next one!
