A heavy cloud settled over the wizarding world as they were in the middle of a war that left everyone holding onto the people closest to them. Many listened to hear names of loved ones that disappeared hoping that they weren't a part of the ever-growing list of dead witches and wizards. Hidden away in a small pocket of joy was a young family trying their best to raise their young son in a household filled with laughter instead of tense worry. Hence why tonight was a special night indeed as a young mother and her daughter cautiously made their way to the warm house. With a secret knock and hastily asked questions the prove everyone was who they should be the young mother and daughter were rushed into the warm house where at once the atmosphere changed into one of happiness.
"UNCLE PRONG'S!" The small brown-haired child yelled rushing towards her favorite uncle with her chubby arms held up desperate to be held. With a jubilant laugh, James reached down swooping his goddaughter into his strong arms before tossing the young child into the air. Shrill laughter escaped the toddler before finally nestling into his hold hugging the man as tightly as she could. While she didn't know a whole lot about what was going on in the world, you know due to her only being three years old, the child was very bright and knew every hug should be cherished.
"My little Jo-Jo bean! Oh, how I missed you!" Joanna, also known lovingly as Jo-Jo bean giggled once again before holding her tiny hands on either side of her uncle's face causing his glasses to slightly be pushed up as his lips puckered up.
"Guess what Uncle Prongs? Mummy says that Moony should be home soon. Can you believe it?" Joanna whispered leaning in like it was a secret only the two were allowed to know about. When her mother Anna told her daughter the news she also made sure that no one knew about her father even being gone in the first place. He was on order business after all and Dumbledore was counting on him.
Nodding his head James whispered back about his own joys of one of his best friends coming back from a mission. Before long the two went in search of Harry, James' own son so the three could play. After all, James was just a child with adult features. The two women who were left in the living room greeted each other with warm welcomes of their own. Best friends since their Hogwarts years they were glad that their families blended so well together.
"I still can't believe she calls him Moony." The redhead Lily chuckled shaking her head at her goddaughter's words.
"Oh, I know. Remus gets so annoyed. He's been trying to get her to say daddy forever. Of course, she'll do anything to be like her Uncle James." Laughing the two catch up on everything that's happened to both their families since last they saw each other. They tried to keep it light, but with the war and the threat to the Potter family, it was a very difficult task indeed. Before long the three children made their appearance known once again in a very James-like manner. With chaos and lots of laughter. Sitting on top of a small broom was none other than baby Harry sitting in the front and Joanna with her arms wrapped around him from the back. Both children's laughter was filled with joy as James helped to navigate them around the room. Pretending to host a Quidditch match James flew the two children as they dodged rouge bludgers, and scored goal after goal before finally dive bombing to catch the golden Snitch.
"With a dashing team like those two James, I reckon you could go all the way to the world cup!" Anna shouted in joy as she caught her daughter as the broom zoomed close by. Tickling her daughter's belly Anna reveled in the delighted sounds her daughter was making. The world was too dark and the sounds of her child's laughter were growing further and further between. Both families needed this happy night to remember what they were truly fighting for. Once the broom was put away and both children were left to each other's company the adults were finally able to catch up on what was going on outside the safely bubble that was the Potter's house.
With the slumber mood, they were able to hear the warning of someone trying to enter through the protective barrier. With wide eyes, James ran to the window to see what dangers awaited them. His heart dropped and a determination filled every vein in his body.
"It's him. Lily, and Anna, hurry take the child and run. I'll hold him off." Both women fought him before James was finally able to get them to run after bringing up the safety of the children who have now noticed the tense environment.
"Mummy, what's going on?" Joanna cried as she was snatched up into her mother's hold alongside Harry. Anna left the question unanswered as she followed Lily into Harry's bedroom as quickly as she could. Both women knew how the night was going to end for them. There was no escaping. Their only hope was that somehow some way they would be able to save their children from the horrors that were bound to happen. Huddled together they heard the sound of the front door bursting open and the heart-shattering words that the two women knew left Harry without a father. Anna kissed her daughter on the head before looking into her watery blue eyes.
"My sweet Joanna. Always remember how much I love you. Never forget do you hear me?" Waiting for her daughter to nod in acknowledgment Anna could hear him getting closer and closer to the room. With a heavy heart, she passed her daughter over to her best friend.
"I'll try and keep him away for as long as I can." She whispered to Lily who tried to pull her back. With a deep breath, Anna steeled herself for battle. Quickly making her way outside the nursery she fought with everything she had to protect her family, but like James, it wasn't enough. He was too powerful and soon she met her own end with her last thoughts of her loving husband who would no doubt struggle beyond repair with her death. She thought of her beautiful mother who was her most fierce protector, and lastly her daughter. Her wonderful, brilliant little girl. She begged for forgiveness for not being stronger. For having to leave her behind.
Back in the nursery Voldemort finally entered stepping over the dead body of Anna Lupin. Joanna screamed at seeing her mother's body. She looked like she was just taking a nap, but Joanna knew there was something wrong. She knew this was a bad man and she knew her mother would never let someone like him this close to her without a fight. Lily quickly placed both children into the crib. Placing her body in front of the children she begged him to leave them alone. Seeing his wand aimed at her only child Lily threw herself in front of the spell without a thought. She like the others didn't care that she had to die if it meant that her child and goddaughter were able to live.
Finally, all that was left was the two children who cried for their parent's comfort. With one last spell, Voldemort was gone and Harry and Joanna were both left with horrible scars. Harry, a single lighting bolt across his forehead, and Joanna, a deep cut across her chest. Both scars left a reminder of the start of their lives being changed forever.
