Chapter Twenty-Three

A War To Win.

Part One

"We never found out what was under Toby's bed in that hole." Samia croaked from her bed.

"Don't worry about it. We will look into it before heading to Helroute. Lukas said he would come here and look after you while we're gone." Skarlet told her.

"What? I'm not going?"

"I really don't think you're in the right state to. You should be dead. It is only because Lukas could get here so fast that you're alive. Letitia practically punched a gaping hole right through you." Skarlet said unusually calmly.

"Yeah, thanks for reminding me... How is she doing?"

"Okay, she can get up and walk about but still needs rest. Limus's spells must be strong to have her feeling this weak two days later-"

"I've been in here two days?!" Samia was surprised, but could not express it in her voice, she was just too weak.

"Unconscious for two days, you mean. It is the best place for both of you at the moment. If it makes you feel better, Kaine did run to try and catch you when you fell. Probably a good job he did not, his arms would snap."

"Are you trying to call me fat?" Samia had just enough strength to raise her eyebrows.

"No. I'm trying to say Kaine is weak." The two girls giggled. "We're going to miss you when we go, you know. You're a great little fighter."

Samia smiled. "Thanks. I'm going to miss you guys too."

"Want some water?" Skarlet asked.

Samia nodded and Skarlet left to go fill up the water jug that sat empty by the side of Samia's bed. At the moment Skarlet walked out, Tria came bounding in.

After an excruciatingly painful hug, Samia was released and said, "Anyone would think I came back from the dead."

"Not far off! How are you feeling?"

"Tired. Weak. In pain now, after that bear hug." Samia said.

"Sorry." Tria paused. "Has Kaine been to see you since you woke up?"

"No. Why?"

"He said he would... Must be busy. He has been so worried you weren't going to wake up. After all, we were told Katia would be okay and then suddenly she's gone-"

"Yeah thanks for that, Tria. Really don't need to hear that right now."

"Of course not, I'm sorry. I'm not happy about Jovah just whisking us off to Helroute without you."

"Yeah, me either. I should be there with you guys, but I guess it's for the best."

Skarlet returned with the water. "Oh, hey Tria." She smiled, and then looked at Samia. "You're popular today."

"I'm going to go ask Jovah about finding out what was in the hole under Toby's bed. Something doesn't seem quite right about it." Tria said.

Jovah opened his office door after hearing a timid knocking revealing Tria and Skarlet stood twiddling their thumbs. "We know you're busy planning this attack, but can we check out the hole in Toby's room?"

"It's empty." Jovah said.

"Yeah but using some charms we might be able to trace anything that was there. Like the book hiding the Shield. He may have kept it in there. Then we will know exactly where he is in Helroute instead of scouring the whole city."

"Look, girls, I appreciate that you want to help. But Lukas needs to be present if we want to track him. We can see if the book was there, but there's no way we can track it down without a warlocks help. Be my guest, but it's a waste of time." He closed the door.

Skarlet looked at Tria, "He's much moodier these days."

"What's happening now?" Jayden said from behind them, making both girls jump and clutch their chests.

"Just had a good idea but as usual Jovah shut it down."

"I did not 'shut it down' as you say, Tria. I just made you aware that there is no point, and I am not about to call Lukas back so soon. He has a life and other things to do." Jovah had exited his office and was seemingly listening to their conversation.

"I'm still going to see if the book was there. That way we will know he's definitely got it." Tria said. "You guys coming?"

Skarlet and Jayden followed Tria who seemed to be storming off ahead, stamping her feet with every step. The spiral staircase clanging as she sped up the steps was the only noise coming from within the Hall that day. Everyone was silent, knowing they would be heading off to battle soon.

The hallways were empty, everyone was either in the training hall, visiting Samia or sitting in their rooms. As Tria got to Toby's bedroom door, still slightly open, she pushed the door open violently and rushed inside and straight to the bed, which was still moved to the side, revealing that secret hole in the floor.

"Do you even know how to trace things?" Jayden asked.

"I know how to figure out if there was anything here. If the Shield was in here, the readings will be much stronger considering it is a blessed item."

"Hidden in a book. Maybe it'll be harder to trace." Skarlet suggested.

"At least I'm doing something. All Jovah seems to be doing is sitting in his office talking to werewolves. At least if I do this, I could always call Lukas to see if he can track the Shield." Tria said, not looking up or even looking at either of them.

"But Jovah said not to-"

"I don't care." Tria interrupted Jayden, "Jay, I do not give a damn what Jovah said. If I think this will help us, then I'm going to do it."

Part Two

Tommy's killer, still locked in the cell, was pacing around impatiently. They cannot keep me here forever. They could if they wanted, but they liked to keep the five cells they had vacant for other criminals of this world.

A full twenty-four hours had passed since he had been questioned, and he felt that they would try again soon. Just because he did not have a 'good enough' reason for killing Tommy, they wouldn't let him out. And Lars felt he did not deserve to be here.

He had snapped. Simple as that. He was fighting to keep his girl. A girl that most people believed could do better, and now, they definitely would try anything to keep Missie away from him.

He had messed up before, but never like this. He took a fellow demon hunter's life. And a good Demon hunter at that. Only now was he beginning to feel guilty. Ashamed, almost. But he knew that no matter how much grovelling he did, he would never be let back into the Hall. Missie would hate him. Everyone would hate him.

Even if he was allowed to go back and join the others, no one would want him there. He would not want to be there knowing they hated him. Maybe even scared of him.

He had done the unspeakable. And he would probably be stripped of his powers and sent to live like a human. Watching from the outside. An outsider. Someone insignificant. At least to the people he wanted to be with. He did not want to be a human.

He wanted to slay demons and protect his people. In his defence, that is all he was doing when he plunged that knife into Tommy's chest, repeatedly. He was protecting his girlfriend from a rat, in his mind. He thought he knew Tommy wanted his girlfriend and he was not about to lose her to him. He was protecting her from making a mistake.

No, that will not get me anywhere, either, Lars thought to himself. Maybe I could say that I thought he was the one hiding the Shield...
