Death is an inevitable part of one's life. In fact, the only point of life is to die. It's the one truly unavoidable thing in life. It's like a predetermined fate, yet still adamantly hated by each and every being on this planet. As such, a natural process like death shouldn't be reversible. Actually, it may be the one truly irreversible thing in life. That is why it's irresponsible to reverse it. This story will delve into the life of a man given the ability to reverse death, and his journey through a supernatural world filled to the brim with it.
Kanzi woke in the early morning like he always does. To him, everything is truly beautiful. That's not because he thinks every thing is beautiful, but because he shuts himself off from everything not beautiful. He moved country to country, looking for the most beautiful land, and ended up back in America because nowhere was beautiful and it was easy to live there. He went from city to city, looking for one with a beautiful landscape to look out on. What he found was a town called Andlesville. It was a quiet place with low crime and perfectly maintained cityscape. And within it was a school perfect for him to attend, full of people he deemed beautiful. And so, through whatever means he used to get there, transferred over to this new place and started going to school.
For the most part, everything went how he like normal for the day. He went to class, took his notes, packed up, and went to his club. It was the Arts Club, although they actually did very little studying of the arts. It was just a place for people who wanted to hang out to hang out. There were only four people who went there: Kaz, a workaholic by all definitions of the word, dedicated almost entirely to studying, even doing quite a bit in the club itself. Mika, an air headed girl, who still managed to get decent grades and was definitely quite popular. Nami, a girl who seemed to adamantly refuse to talk, instead writing what she says on a whiteboard; no one knows anything about her really. And then Kanzi, a man obsessed with the beautiful.
Club went like normal, the members reading whatever books, some idle banter between Kanzi and Mika, and Kaz and Nami doing whatever it is they do at their table during the second half of club. Kanzi decided to walk home with Mika, being what most would describe as best friends.
This however, was a bad mistake on Kanzi's part.
As they were walking home they passed by an alleyway, almost paying it no heed. That was, until someone (presumably a robber or thief of some sort) came running out with a knife in his hand pointed outwards. The thief was running too fast for either of them to move out of the way, so he stabbed his knife right into Mika's chest, running away immediately afterwards.
Mika had less than a few seconds left to live, collapsing onto Kanzi and him kneeling down on the ground. Their silent exchange only lasted a few moments, Mika looking up at him as if to say 'Don't worry, it's not your fault,' while Kanzi cried more than he thought was physically possible. His first encounter with the beast known as death, taking away his one best friend in front of his eyes.
"Why me?!" he shouted out aimlessly, " I worked so hard to find this beautiful place, to keep it beautiful, to keep its people beautiful, so why must I be punished with this ugliness?!"
It truly was an ugly sight. The blood creating a puddle around her, soaking her clothes and his pants. Nothing about it could be deemed beautiful, save for maybe her peaceful face. He didn't grieve only because she was his friend, but because his beautiful ideals had to be tarnished by something like this.
And as if his ideals and grief were enough to change the world, something happened. It was too quick for him to notice, and he didn't have a very clear memory of anything else that happened the rest of the day.
And then, Kanzi woke in the early morning like he always does.
