First Impressions

People say 'never judge someone by their appearance'. It's not about who they are on the outside that counts, but about who they are on the inside that matters. First impressions are often wrong. The way we dress is how we get labelled. The labelling of who we're supposed to be can start in school, mainly our high school years. Well, it does for me.

I am always dressed up neat and clean. People will pass by me, look at me and think to themselves, 'oh, look a newbie." They judge me because I am dressed smartly and will assume I am the new kid on the block. I may be dressed up differently to those who are here, but that doesn't mean I'm new here. I just take care of my appearance.

There is one girl here who, although dresses smartly as well, takes it much further and goes way over the top. For her, she is always dressed in pink. And I mean everything. Even her hair is pink. Whenever we are in a room together, I can see she is in a world of her own. Every time I look at her out of the corner of my eye, she is always doodling on her book. When I pass by her to get to my seat, I can see her book is covered in hearts. And yes, you guessed right, they are pink hearts. I don't understand why she is always dressed in pink and is doodling hearts. It's like she is obsessed with it or something. But, instead of judging her immediately I sit next to her and ask her, 'Hey, sorry to bother you, but I was just wondering why do always wear pink?' She looks at me and smiles. She introduces herself to me. She tells me her name is Lizzie Bennett and replies, 'I wear pink,' she says ' because I'm a bit of a romantic.' See for her, she dresses up to suit her personality. I dress up because I like to look smart plus we are in a school setting, a place where formal dress code is the thing.

Next to her is another girl. She is too, dressed up differently. Her outfit consists of a cream blouse with lace criss-crossing in the middle, floor-length brown skirt and black leather boots. To me, it seems her outfit is that of the medieval era. If I were to guess why she dressed up like that I would assume she was weird. I mean who would dress up in an outfit like that. We are of course, in the 21st century not the 12th century. However, my judgement would be wrong. I was informed the reason why Marian Locksley (that was her name) was dressed up in medieval style clothing was because she was interested in the history of Medieval England.

A boy in the row in front of me was dressed up in a loosely fitted black t-shirt and black jeans. My first impression of him was that he was a goth. Once again my judgement was wrong. John Proctor, the boy who I thought was a goth was, in fact, a Theatre fanatic and he was wearing all black because in Theatre the whole ensemble would wear black. It is kind of a tradition that when doing ensemble work students would wear black. It is kind of like school uniforms or sports uniforms.

Next to John Proctor was Sherlock Holmes. Now Sherlock was an interesting character. He was a boy with a brilliant mind, a boy who enjoyed puzzles and trying to find answers to some of the impossible questions. Every day, he was impeccable with his long black coat and scarf tied tight around his neck. His dark brown curls were always uncovered. He, of course, wouldn't be seen without his sidekick, his one friend and companion. Of course, I am talking about the scientifically brilliant John Watson. John was a bit shorter than Sherlock and was always dressed in a checkered red shirt with blue jeans. He was a science geek especially in biology and chemistry. His dream was to become a doctor. I always thought it was odd that whenever John was around Sherlock wasn't too far behind and vice versa, however I soon came to learn that they had been friends since the two of them met each other in their last year of 9th Grade.

So far, I've introduced the Romantic English Literature student, the History student, the Theatre student and the Detective Literature student. They are, however, not the only characters here at school. You then have Harry Pearce, Lucas North, Ros Myers, Tariq Masood and Erin Watts. The tech wiz kids who are obsessed with the latest technology. They always have the latest gadgets no matter what. You can also bet they still have the old models of certain ones too. They don't throw anything away. You never know when you might need an old tape recorder or a Nokia mobile phone. They are a close-knit group. Known to the rest of us as Section D.

You, see you should never judge a book by its cover. Just because you don't like what you see, doesn't mean there isn't any more to it than meets the eye.
