It was only going to be two years. He was only supposed to be gone for two years, and then come back home to start making the new album. He promised nothing would happen; but things always happen, life is uncontrollable, and a very hard curveball was thrown his way.
Donghae rushed into the hospital and up to a nurse’s desk. “Eunhyuk,” he panted. “Where’s Eunhyuk?”
“Right down the hallway,” a nurse informed.
Donghae took no time reaching his best friend’s room. He hurried inside and witnessed a doctor giving Eunhyuk an injection. “What’re you giving him?” the brunette questioned.
“Just a little extra medicine to hopefully help the pain go down,” the doctor stated before leaving the two alone.
Eunhyuk opened his eyes slowly and saw Donghae standing in the doorway. “Hey man,” he muttered with a raspy voice.
“Hey,” Donghae replied before pulling a chair up next to his blonde best friend. “What happened to you Eunhyuk?”
Eunhyuk turned his face away from Donghae and said as tears rolled down his face “We were getting ready to learn how to handle grenades and one of them accidentally set off prematurely. Five were killed, and eleven of us were hospitalized.” He turned to look at Donghae, and whispered “The doctor said I could never dance again.”
Donghae’s eyes widened. “Why?”
The blonde squeezed his eyes shut as tears leaked out of the corners of his eye sockets. “My whole lower body was damaged; a lot of veins erupted, my heart hurting, and they’re even saying I may have to get a leg amputated. I have no place in Super Junior now.”
“That’s not true Eunhyuk,” Donghae denied as he gently touched his friend’s shoulder.
“How can I fulfill my role as group dancer if I’m no longer able to do what I’m good at?” Eunhyuk questioned.
“The guys are not going to kick you out just because you can’t dance,” Donghae said.
“SM Entertainment is going to have a field day with this news. I wouldn’t be surprised if they tore up my contract today,” Eunhyuk replied.
“We won’t let them do it,” Donghae promised. “Super Junior will stand beside you, ELF will stand beside you, and the other groups will stand beside you; you’re not alone Eunhyuk.” The brunette took Eunhyuk’s hand. “You’ve never been alone.”
The blonde smiled at his best friend. “You were my very first friend when Super Junior was formed, and even to this day, I still get the honor of calling Lee Donghae my best friend,” he said.
“Super Junior brought us together, and when we started doing duo stuff, I’d never felt closer to you,” Donghae admitted.
Eunhyuk interlaced his hands with Donghae’s as he stated “It was never just fan service. I really do care about you Donghae; you make me happy when I’m upset, you understand me better than any other member, and you never cease to make me smile.”
Tears glistened in Donghae’s eyes as he replied with tears falling “You make me happy too Eunhyuk. You make me very, very happy.”
Donghae then leaned down and gently kiss Eunhyuk’s lips. He’d kissed Eunhyuk before for fan service, but this time was different. This time he truly meant it, and wanted to let Eunhyuk know he would stick by him through the end. Pulling away, Donghae whispered “You can’t leave me Eunhyuk, you just can’t.”
The blonde’s tears came out faster as Eunhyuk began to cry louder. Donghae wrapped his arms carefully around his best friend and held him close. “Stay with me until the end Donghae,” Eunhyuk cried as he buried his face in Donghae’s shoulder.
Donghae let his tears fall as he responded “I will, I won’t leave you, not now, not ever.”
True to his word, Donghae stayed with Eunhyuk for the next two weeks, constantly watching over his best friend, talking to him, letting the doctors poke and prod at the blonde. The one thing that wasn’t getting any better was Eunhyuk’s heart. Eunhyuk was literally dying of a broken heart. “How could he be dying of a broken heart?” Donghae asked a doctor.
“Dance means everything to Eunhyuk, I think hearing the news that he could never do it again has sent him into a depression that’s too deep for him to escape from,” the doctor explained.
“Is that why Eunhyuk?” Donghae wondered after the doctor left the room.
“That’s only part of it. My heart knows that it’s going to be separated from you and I can’t stand the thought of that,” Eunhyuk informed with tears glistening in his eyes.
“We won’t be separated Eunhyuk,” Donghae promised as he sat down next to him. “Remember our song? Tokyo, London, New York, Paris, oppa, oppa. We’ll travel the world together again, just you and me, I don’t care if I have to carry you; I’ll go wherever you want.”
Eunhyuk forced a small smile before taking his best friend’s hand. “You’re my oppa Donghae,” he stated.
Donghae pressed his hand against Eunhyuk’s bruised face, kissed his lips, and whispered “You’re my oppa too Eunhyuk.”
Looking up at the heart monitor, Donghae saw that Eunhyuk’s heart beats were decreasing; which told him the blonde didn’t have much time left. Looking back at Eunhyuk, the brunette saw Eunhyuk’s eyes begin to flutter as he drifted in and out of consciousness. Using his last bit of strength, Eunhyuk reached his hand up and stroked Donghae’s face with his thumb before muttering “I love you Donghae.”
“I love you too Eunhyuk, my eternal oppa,” Donghae said softly before Eunhyuk dropped his hand and closed his eyes for the last time as his heart monitor flat lined.
Donghae kissed Eunhyuk’s forehead before sitting there almost frozen in time. His best friend, his partner, his band member, his soul mate was gone. The brunette covered his mouth as he closed his eyes and muffled his cries. The doctors came in and saw that Eunhyuk was gone and said “Sir, we’re going to have to take him away now.”
“Can I have just a minute, please?” Donghae snapped as he half turned his head towards the doctors.
“Sure, take all the time you need,” they replied before closing the door back.
Donghae turned back to his best friend, before reaching down and stroking Eunhyuk’s blonde hair one last time while quietly singing “Tokyo, London, New York, Paris, oppa, oppa.”
