The Elementals

Chapter 1: The Principal

 I feel sweat dripping down my face as I ran as fast as I could across the sidewalk. It was a hot, August, Summer morning and it was my first day of school at Ivywood High School. I had just moved from Idaho to Ivywood, NC, and it was hard to adjust to life in a new place.

I am an only child at the age of 16. We had to move because my mom got a job at the Ivywood Children's Dentistry (ICD). My mom and dad got divorced because they had a fight over who had to take care of me.

My mom thought that they should both take care of me whenever they could. But, my Dad said that my mom should do it all.

I sped past a boy that looked about my age. The boy shouts, "Where are you going?"

I was so lost in my thoughts that I didn't hear him, so I keep on running. He asked again. This time I hear him. "School." I answered.

"Me too", the boy said. "Do you want to walk to school with me?" He asked.

"Sure." I answered.

The boy told me his name was Tay and I told him mine was Lyte. Turns out he is also 16 years old and he also goes to Ivywood.

First thing we did was meet the principal. When we walked into the office there was nobody at the principal's desk, then suddenly I hear a hissing noise, than from under the desk we see the principal. "Hi I'm Principal Smith", he said. "Don't mind me. I'm just looking for a pencil I dropped."

At the beginning the interview went well, but soon he starts asking strange things like "What's your power?" I could see the nervous look on Tay's face grow bigger. Then I felt a tickle of electricity on my hand and when the principal saw it he jumped out of his chair. For the first time I realized he was no principal, he was a serpentine.

The only weapon I had was the pencil Principal Smith dropped. Suddenly, I felt static electricity build up in my arm. Then, BOOM!!! A lightning bolt hit the creature's tail and in a blink of an eye his tail was gone. He screamed in pain then tried to grab me by the neck.

Suddenly, a black ball went zooming past me. I couldn't believe it, Tay had just shot some sort of a weird looking shadow at the principal, and it hit the principal/serpentine in the face. The principal/serpentine was furious. He made an attempt to bite me with his fangs but I dodged it. My vision was blurry but I could make out the shape of the snake injecting acid into Tay, I thought my friend was hopeless, but the venom only made him stronger.

The serpentine made a grab for me, and would've gotten me if he hadn't been frozen by a figure far away.

After a long talk with Tay, two boys and a girl came running towards us.

"Hi", the girl said "I am Ember, and this is Thenus and Julius".

"Hi", I said. I couldn't help but to think that my body was getting colder. "Sorry", Thenus said once he noticed, "It happens when I'm happy".

"Wow!!', Tay interrupted, "Something is seriously going on here".

I couldn't focus all I could think about is what the serpentine had meant when he asked me what my power was. I didn't know it but life was just about to get way more serious than I hoped it would ever be.

All of a sudden I heard someone off in the distance yell "LYTE!" It was my mom. I located the nearest classroom and saw that it was already 10:00 am.
