Chapter 44

" What the hell are you talking about?" Hazel asked her in an even tone. A few birds had descended closer to the ground, some seem to be leaning in threateningly. A hummingbird perched itself on her shoulder and seemed to be looking at them as well. A tapping noise echoed and a hawk perched on a metal pole behind her, was tapping on steel with its talons rhythmically. " What is this?"

" Allow to rephrase that question. Where is the Fall Maiden?" Emerald and Mercury were taken back by this and both were ready to fight. " That girl, has killed my Blue Jay...and the little Iris as well." She took a breath and sighed. " I'm giving you a chance to leave us. All of you." No one moved. " I see." She smiled a bit and laughed. She whistles and the flock moved. They shrieked and chattered as they all swooped down and surround the three. Veena took off the bind from Liam and put it over her own eyes. " Let's go." They sneaked away as the flock distracted them. As soon as they disappeared into the crowd, the attack let up and the birds flew off, out of sight. All but the hawk and the crow, both had only sat and watched. They crow squawked and left, confirming the identity of the culprits. He needed to discuss their next move with the others. The hummingbird would send word and they'll come as they always do.

" Hey, Owen." Ruby greeted her as she walked over to see her after class. A bright eyed girl was walking with her and she introduced herself cheerfully.

" Hello, I'm Rachel Evergreen but you can call me Rizzie. Nice to meet you! Owen told me a bit about you, Little Rose." She winked at the red hooded girl and smiled. " Let's go talk somewhere private, I know a great spot where no one can hear us." She led them to the headmistress' garden and gave a mischievous smile. " Don't worry, Miss Ashen won't mind." She led them to her favourite seat, underneath a plumeria tree and invited them to join her. " Okay, so my reason may not be as dramatic or cool like Liam's or Owen's story but here goes. So, I decided to follow Vee, because she's cool." Ruby waited for her to continue but there was just silence.

" That's it? You're just gonna listen to her cause she's...cool?" That can't be the only reason. Owen shrugged as if she gave up trying to pry a long time ago. " There's gotta be something else.." Ruby tried to pry but to no avail.

" It's cause she's cool. That's really it. Ever since I met her when we enrolled together, I just kept thinking that she was so darn cool. With her semblance and the whole reincarnation thing. But the coolest thing about her, is that she's flawed. Just like we all are. She's never scared to show it, even if she makes us really worried sometimes. Some days, she's an insomniac and then on tired days, she can be pretty forgetful about little things, like a grandma. Maybe it's because she knew who she was. But, yeah, I'm following her cause she's our cool-headed leader."

Qrow came in through the window, Zea had left it open for him. He addresed the room with a curt nod. Everyone was there all but the ever workaholic owl and, the Blue Jay. He had gone peacefully, accepting his death with satisfaction, leaving behind no promises. He liked the guy, he had to admit but that's not the case at the moment. The Lark had to substitute for his father for the day, otherwise he has information on their killer. That ice cream girl was also an issue. But surprisingly for Qrow, he wasn't the one whose late. The Sparrow entered the room with a sigh, followed by a hawk and a nightingale. She took off her binds and the spirits came in view.

" Sparrow, that Neo girl-" She put up a hand and Heather stopped. She was tired as usual, in a good way this time.

" How was their burial?" She asked Zack. " If we have time to speak then we have time to to talk about this. Did you do as I asked, Lark?"

" Yes, asters for the little girl and marigold for Pen." She smiled gently and thanked him.

" So, what do have?" She asked the room.

" The Fall Maiden, Cinder Fall. She killed our Blue Jay with an arrow that went right through him and...reached Miki. Much like how she killed Pyrrha Nikos during the Fall of Beacon. She wanted to hitch a ride to come her, that ice cream girl brought her there. I thought she was a friend to our Blue Jay, turns out I thought wrong. Lark investigated her, through mind link." Usually Veena disliked mind links, an upmost invasion of one's privacy, but she didn't care right now. She gestured him to contiue.
