CHAPTER SEVEN
“I love you.” Kyle says proudly and the whole world comes to a stop around me. My heart starts hammering in my chest and my palms begin to sweat. I know he loves me as a friend, of course he does…but I have a feeling this is more than a friendship type of love… what do I tell him. I want to be honest with him, but I'm to really 100% sure of my feelings for him.
Sure he is sweet and caring, loving and has a great sense of humor, but do I love him like he loves me? I thought we’re only friends? Since when did his feeling for me change? Or have they always been like he is showing me now? I can’t think of a time significant that I noticed a change in him. Maybe it’s very recent, or just the fright of what happened to Nanna that’s making him suddenly feel this way.
Oh, this is utterly confusing.
Why now all of a sudden would he confess something like this to me? It’s confusing and outright bad timing. “Kyle…” I begin, but his lips come down gently on mine and all I do is close my eyes and sink deeper and deeper into the kiss. Somehow I always knew he loved me more than a friend, but do I feel the same? How can do I know if I feel the same? How can he love me more than a friend?
We have always been there for each other, but did he always love me like this?
I shut down the logical part of my brain and enjoy the feel of his tender lips on mine. His hands grip my hips tightly and a fire begins to blaze deep from within me. I moan softly at his touch and somehow I know I love Kyle too, is it enough though? Is it the same?
I push him away from me reluctantly and stare deep into his eyes “I love you too Kyle, but I don’t know if it is the same way you love me…” I say resigned and look away from the hurt in his eyes. “I will always love you Kim, nothing will change that and I will change your mind about me…I know you love me more than a friend, but you’re just not ready yet to see it.” He kisses my cheek and slowly lets go of my hips.
A piercing scream draws our attention and within a blink of an eye we are both running up to Aunt Hanna’s room. The first thing I see is the covers wrapped around her body and her thrashing around screaming bloody murder. I stop Kyle from approaching her and move forward myself.
I grip her arms tight and press them down next to her body to keep her from hitting me and effectively she screams more and begs whoever she’s seeing in her nightmare to stop, “Please don’t!” she begs and I can hear Kyle curse behind me.
I gently place my palm on Aunt Hanna’s forehead and begin whispering soothingly to her “Nanna, it’s me Kim. You are safe, no one is hurting you. You are safe in your bed. Nanna, it’s okay, you’re alright.”
I repeat myself over and over until her body begins to relax and her screams die down to soft helpless whimpers. Sweat covers her forehead and with my sleeve I wipe the droplets away and soothingly begin to sing the same lullaby as before. Her whole face and body relaxes and she drifts off to sleep once again.
She curls into a ball once again and I just sit on the bed and rub small circles on her back as I watch her sleep. My poor Nanna… what have they done to you.
I stand up eventually and walk silently to our room with Kyle following behind. “We have to do something Kyle” I state firmly with anger clear in my voice. “What can we do Kim?” I pace up and down thinking of possible yet not so dangerous things we can do to get back at the people or monsters who did what they did to our poor Nanna.
“First we have to know who we are after we cannot just attack the whole Guard and assume they all had something to do with what happened to Nanna. We have to check the cameras.” Kyle nods and takes lead as we head to Nanna’s office. He takes charge, clearing her table and logging into the surveillance cameras all under a minute.
