"The Divorce"
"Text me when you need to be picked up." My mother says with a smile.
"Mom I can walk it's only a few streets, besides you usually go to bed at half 7 every night anyway." I laughed but my smile lessened when my mother frowned and looked down at her lap.
"C-c-come on Violet I thought I was a cool mom!" She joked.
"There's no such thing as a cool mom who also does palates." I said then playfully punching her shoulder.
"You wouldn't want to be late now would you," she pauses, "violoceraptor."
"NooOooO!" I scream as my mom starts to tickle me. "I'm seventeen! Mom! Mom stop!"
"Come on get outta here!" My mom says in a Arnold Schwarzenegger voice.
"Get to the choppa!" I say back in the same voice as I get out of the car and close the door.
My mother drives off and leaves me standing by myself outside the house that I would stay at once a week every week for the last 3 years to babysit Corrie and Jasper, my second cousins.
It was a weekly occurrence that Mr and Mrs Mills would go out on a 'date night.' Over the years I've sort of realised that they would mainly just get drunk and bang in cheap hostels, and forget about their obligations for a while. The kids, the job, the house - just a one night holiday away from it all. I couldn't blame them, Corrie and Jasper are absolute mongrels! You know once they filled balloons with water and hot sauce, then threw them at me? One landed on my face and I couldn't see for 7 hours, so yeah they are a delight to baby sit!
Although in all fairness they have seen me more as an equal rather than a slave recently, ever since their parents marriage has began to break down. A few weeks ago I found a marriage counseling pamphlet in the bin, which explained why they started to go out earlier in the night and arrive home earlier.
"Hello?" I opened the door and peaked through the crack, I saw Diane sitting on the kitchen counter top looking at a folder full of what looked like pages.
"Oh Violet!" She squeaked and quickly hid the folder from my view. "How've you been sweets?"
"Yeah I've been alright, you?" I smile at her, she smiles back but it looks forced.
"Great yeah just uhhh....," she stutters as she peers behind me, her smile fades. "Violets here."
I turn around to see Mr mills, impatiently standing at the stairs.
"Hey Jon." I smiled at him, he titled his head up for a moment as if he was dismissing my kindness. Jon's one of the calmest dudes I know, it's so weird to see the both of them act like such pricks. But I say nothing, all well knowing their marriage is dawning on the final days and they have enough shit to deal with.
"Okay well, um...." I try to lighten the awkward pause in conversation. "I'm gonna say hey to the kids." I say completely out of character for me, this was the part of this job I dreaded - which funnily enough was the only part of the job, taking care of the kids.
"Okay sweets," Diane rested a hand on my shoulder and looked at me in such a way that I felt like something big was troubling her. "We are going to head off now, goodnight."
"Have a good night guys." I sighed looked over to Jon who was looking down at his feet, then back to Diane. I mouthed to her "good luck," as that folder obviously contained divorce papers. She smiled at me and shook her head, "thank you" she mouthed back.
My heart sink suddenly, I mean it's not as if this was all a shock but to see one of the most stable, loving and long running couples in my life's marriage fall apart right in front of me broke my heart.
I head upstairs to the kids separate rooms, I poke my head in Corries room but she wasn't in there.
"Guys!" I yell and hear a small laugher erupt in Jaspers room. This happens all too often, I'm going to open the door and water with pour all over me or flour or whatever. Then I'll have a shower and discover that they stole my clothes and all the towels leaving me with a single sock to cover myself with.
I kick the door open and nothing happens, confused I walk in further when a plethora of nerf guns are aimed at me. Corrie and Jasper we hiding at the other side of the bed with deep concentration written on their faces."Stay standing right there!" Corrie yells making me laugh.
"Uh oh so scary! You guys gonna shoot me?" I said sarcastically.
"Hey no laughing either....and hands up!" Jasper yells as he stands from his crouching position.
"You guys make terrible cops, seriously Corrie you're magazine isn't even fully in." I point at the gun she was holding.
"Who said we were cops?" Corrie yells, and pushes her the magazine in then standing next to her brother in a war stance.
"What no we're the cops this time!" Jasper whispers to her but it's so loud I could hear. I folded my arms as I watched as war break out between the two of them.
"We're the rebels!" Corrie yells as she shields from Jaspers bullets behind a desk chair.
"I am justice!" Jasper runs up to her and shoots her in the eye making her squeal in pain. She ran up to jasper and struck him on the head with her gun really hard.
"oh my god CORRIE!" I yell, my hands shoot to my face as crimson flooded from Jaspers head. He sat up with his back resting on his bed, blood squirting all over his room.
I ran over to him and took him in my arms, blood instantly covering my hands, I picked him up and ran down the stairs to the home phone. I called 000 and the ambulance came after 10 minutes of panic.
An hour passes
I waited with Corrie anxiously in the waiting room, I tried calling Diane and Jon so many times but neither would pick up.
Corrie hadn't stop crying, ever since she saw her brothers head dripping with blood she's been in bits. I've been comforting her but nothings helping, she needs her mom and dad - and of course Jasper does as well.
Diane always answers her calls, I usually wouldn't even hear the second ring when I called her. I've never met someone so anal about how her children are cared for. The first few times I babysat for her she had nanny cams set up all around the house. Now her kid is literally in hospital and no fucks can be given!
Suddenly I felt my phone vibrate, she was calling me, my hands scrambled to answer it but my nerves were getting the best of me. I pulled away from Corries tight grip and nervously paced up and down the corridor.
"He's gone!" I made out through the eruption of tears and screaming.
"What! Diane are you okay?" I asked, already knowing the answer, it made my knees weak and I felt so lightheaded.
"Jon left." Diane managed to let out over the phone before letting out another cry.
I dropped my phone and slowly swayed backwards. Everything went black.
